A wonderful, masterful book
I had followed Sir Jackie Stewart’s career in motorsport and broadcasting from afar and was pleased to purchase this book, although I was unprepared for how excellent the book truly is. The author’s writing style is fresh, crisp, and candid. The content is quite interesting and inspiring. I tip my hat to the author and thank him for providing the rest of us with an immensely enjoyable read.
A Fast and Generous Life – Well-Written and Entertaining
Jackie Stewart’s sense of humor and keen insights as a color commentator for Formula 1 racing have always appealed to me. But I was surprised to learn he is a fine and entertaining writer. This autobiography shares the low and high moments of a fast-paced life, from his roots in Scotland, the early days as a mechanic in a Dumbuck garage to his triumphs against immense odds to become a Formula 1 champion. I was touched by his giving back so much – improving racing safety, helping others afflicted with dyslexia and organizing events to assist noteworthy causes. His adventures on and off the track will surprise you. The book has the warm feel of an armchair adventure told by an open fire – you will be pleased to enjoy his world, and very cranky that your visit is over when you turn the last page.
As a long time fan…
I am really looking forward to reading this book. I saw Jackie Stewart race in the early 70’s in Germany and Austria. Considering the size of the book I can’t imagine that there can be much left out about his life and career.
Pure Inspiration
If you are even looking at this book, chances are you are very interested in F1. Jackie describes his life in words that sound wonderfully simple, genuine and heartfelt, making sure to connect everything with racing. If you’ve watched Jackie speak, you will undoubtedly hear his voice while reading this book. The man’s personality really comes through. His love for racing is clear, but his love for the people in his life comes through even more strongly. The strength and depth of relationships and his attention to the smallest details when dealing with people are amazing. I bought this book expecting to learn about the man. Instead, as an aspiring entrepreneur, this book turned out to be exactly what I needed. The deftness, honesty and tact with which Jackie approaches opportunities is marvelous.
The book is one-sided in that it contains only positive things. Given that Jackie is still alive and still working on business partnerships, I guess it makes sense that he would leave out some of the not-so-rosy stuff, but it does reduce the force of some of the words, especially later in the book. Also, be prepared for a lot of emotions and crying. There really is a lot of crying going on here and it starts to get a “wee bit” too much.
Despite the problems, this book really inspired me to work even harder and pay attention to a lot of things in my life that I wasn’t. Yes, this book did change my life and I will heartily recommend it, especially to young people.
Must Read!
I got this book for my husband for his birthday – he’s an avid race fan! He just loves it, with all the inside story of early Formula One racing and the life of the wee Scot. It’s a must read for race fans that would like some of the history of this great sport.
