Suffering from the extreme bad luck of being released at the same time as the low-budget The Blair Witch Project, this adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House attempts to update Shirley Jacksons psychologically terrifying ghost story to the era of big-budget, computerized special effects. Does it work? Well, lets just say that showing isnt exactly the same as telling. A prime example of bloated studio filmmaking, The Haunting telegraphs all its frights so blatantly that it forsakes any of Jacksons subtle horrors for the remedial scares of a clunky carnival ride. The story remains basically the same, with four people called to an old mansion for experiments in the supernatural, but instead of getting inside the heads of its main characters (as the 1963 adaptation by Robert Wise did so well), Jan DeBonts film deserts character development for the huge, glorious set design provided by Eugenio Zanetti (Restoration). Thus, instead of a well-drawn story you get… a well-drawn house, one that four very talented and underutilized actors–Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liam Neeson, and Owen Wilson–wander around in endlessly (as Zeta-Jones puts it, the house is sort of Charles Foster Kane meets the Munsters). Taylor, as the hypersensitive Nell, is the unknowing lynchpin in the battle between good and bad ghosts and gets saddled with most of the expository dialogue of the mansions gothic backstory. Zeta-Jones (showing some spark) and Neeson (showing none) are sadly reduced to providing reactionary shots of the films disastrous climax, which mixes hapless new-age affirmations with computer-generated effects of ghosts and exploding windows, walls, doors, etc. For this haunted-house story, take a quick tour of the breathtaking rooms, but definitely dont stay the night. –Mark Englehart

I re-watched this again last night. Boy, K-films need two showings!( for any one who does not understand Korean) One to get the gist of the plot from the subtitles, the next to really watch the actors! All the differance in the world. Did anyone notice the puppets? The presence of horror and the warmth of love, grief and remorse are perfect in this little piece.

Five stars? why not?
Well, 5 stars because it was stylistically very lovely. The acting and direction were startlingly good. I will probably watch it again.

But, having said that, and noting that everyone else gives it a top review, I have to say that it didn’t make much sense to me. And I usually enjoy convoluted psychological thrillers. My family saw it before me and begged me to watch it so I could “tell them what happened.” Well, I don’t think even the director knows exactly what happened. Like the Blair Witch Project, this film is all mood (and wonderfully done mood, at that), but what happened?? Someone please have mercy and explain the whole thing to me! I mean (and I don’t want to give any spoilers away (HAH)), what was all that about spiders, and spirits, and why would Min Su-in help him, given the supposed facts of the case? And what answers was he given when he went through the door??? Huh? Please explain!

Having said all that, I do hope many people see this interesting film. I was struck by the lovely movement of some of the actors, with very interesting pacing in the scenes. And I guess it isn’t the first movie I’ve liked, sort of, that didn’t make a lot of sense.

Amnesiac…
SPIDER FOREST is one of the best ghost stories I’ve seen. There’s so much going on that multiple viewings are a (pleasant) requirement. The twists come in rapid-fire succession, building a layered story of loss, betrayal, deception, murder, and the beyond. If you enjoy supernatural tales w/ a heavy dose of mystery and suspense (plus tragic love), then SF will fix you right up! I only hope that hollywood makes no attempt to “re-imagine” this one, as it would be a disaster! The only guy who could handle it would probably be David Lynch. Otherwise, I see another PG-13, cgi, teenybopper extravaganza! This is one more asian masterpiece that should simply be watched, NOT assimilated!…

Anyone whos a fan of Mad Magazine movie parodies will enjoy Bat Thumb, which mocks the Batman movies and original TV series by replacing the actors with thumbs. Computer effects have given these thumbs eyes and mouths but no noses; perhaps creator Steve Oedekerk doesnt think noses are funny. The masked crime-fighting thumb struggles to save Gaaathumb City from the threat of the evil No Face, while taking time out to hop in the sack with hot chicks. Elaborate models and costumes were created for Bat Thumb and the special effects are accomplished; it seems like a lot of effort to create something so silly, but thats part of the joke. Well, who can you tell?
Bat Thumb is the funniest of the thumb movies ever. I don’t remember laughing as hard since seeing Monty Python and the Holy Grail. To those who find the talking thumbs a little too creepy for your liking, then stop here. If you like the creepy thumbs, continue. This movie is just too funny for words, and has so many lines that you’ll be quoting for many days after watching the movie. I recommend this movie to people who like weird but funny humor. It’s good.

Odd, But Funny…
The Bat Thumb feature is only about 30 minutes, but it’s packed full of silliness. I think it’s good that the feature is so short because otherwise the joke might wear off, but it’s perfect at this length. To fully appreciate this DVD, however, you MUST watch the extras. The behind-the-scenes and interviews with the characters are just as hilarious as the movie. I also have Thumb Wars, and I think the Bat Thumb DVD is better because of the extras.

This movie is hilarious and the best thumb movie i’ve seen. The people that don’t get it are people who aren’t to bright they like average humor but if you have an I.Q. of at least 50 and like off beat humor then you will enjoy this great thumb movie.

You know the one about the group of horny kids who get offed one by one? Yeah, so do director Jaume Collet-Serra and his screenwriters, who have updated an old Vincent Price flick and sandwiched it between hearty slices of The Blair Witch Project and various Friday the 13th films. Lots of WB and Fox network hotties–including 24s Elisha Cuthbert, One Tree Hills Chad Michael Murray, and, well, Paris Hilton–have car trouble and stumble onto a town populated by real killer personalities. The R-rated result is fairly gruesome and, though no one ever quite looks frightened enough, Collet-Serra knows his way around a jolting suspense sequence or two. Cuthbert and an unintentionally funny Murray (striking ludicrous poses as some kind of real toughie) act more like angry ex-lovers than the fraternal twins theyre supposed to be; Hilton acts bored while her real-life video scandal is exploited for ironic kicks; and the film heads shamelessly over-the-top with each new twist. As an exercise in bloody mayhem, it has a few novel touches, but you can easily find better scares. –Steve Wiecking

Impressive
I’ve noticed a new trend in the newest horror movies lately where things seem to have gone back to nothing gorey happening until half way through the movie, like they did 20 or 30 years ago. It is like this in House of Wax. I’m not sure whether I like this new development or not but it works with House of Wax.

It starts off with a theme that many other horrors movies have used; a group of teenaged friends have car trouble in the middle of nowhere, half of the friends stay at the car and the other half go to a nearby “deserted” town in search of help.

This is a slasher movie that kills the charactors in origional ways, sometimes involving wax and I was impressed with how gorey this movie was for a fifteen.

Impressive slasher movie with plenty of gore and a good ending. And, come on, who doesnt love it when Paris Hilton gets killed? .

House of Wax Blu-Ray
I really enjoyed this movie, kind of a guilty pleasure. The story is decent, the suspense is good, the acting is pretty good considering Paris Hilton is in it. It’s not the scariest movie you have ever seen but its a very well made horror flick. I was very pleased to see that the transition from DVD to Blu-Ray went well. The movie looks great in High Def.
