You know the one about the group of horny kids who get offed one by one? Yeah, so do director Jaume Collet-Serra and his screenwriters, who have updated an old Vincent Price flick and sandwiched it between hearty slices of The Blair Witch Project and various Friday the 13th films. Lots of WB and Fox network hotties–including 24s Elisha Cuthbert, One Tree Hills Chad Michael Murray, and, well, Paris Hilton–have car trouble and stumble onto a town populated by real killer personalities. The R-rated result is fairly gruesome and, though no one ever quite looks frightened enough, Collet-Serra knows his way around a jolting suspense sequence or two. Cuthbert and an unintentionally funny Murray (striking ludicrous poses as some kind of real toughie) act more like angry ex-lovers than the fraternal twins theyre supposed to be; Hilton acts bored while her real-life video scandal is exploited for ironic kicks; and the film heads shamelessly over-the-top with each new twist. As an exercise in bloody mayhem, it has a few novel touches, but you can easily find better scares. –Steve Wiecking

Impressive
I’ve noticed a new trend in the newest horror movies lately where things seem to have gone back to nothing gorey happening until half way through the movie, like they did 20 or 30 years ago. It is like this in House of Wax. I’m not sure whether I like this new development or not but it works with House of Wax.

It starts off with a theme that many other horrors movies have used; a group of teenaged friends have car trouble in the middle of nowhere, half of the friends stay at the car and the other half go to a nearby “deserted” town in search of help.

This is a slasher movie that kills the charactors in origional ways, sometimes involving wax and I was impressed with how gorey this movie was for a fifteen.

Impressive slasher movie with plenty of gore and a good ending. And, come on, who doesnt love it when Paris Hilton gets killed? .

House of Wax Blu-Ray
I really enjoyed this movie, kind of a guilty pleasure. The story is decent, the suspense is good, the acting is pretty good considering Paris Hilton is in it. It’s not the scariest movie you have ever seen but its a very well made horror flick. I was very pleased to see that the transition from DVD to Blu-Ray went well. The movie looks great in High Def.

One Tree Hill: The Complete First Season marks the beginning of a genuinely engrossing series that maintains, for a long while, an unusual focus on a single, powerful conflict defining the destinies of two characters. Adolescent half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty) Scott have lived parallel lives in One Tree, North Carolina. They share a common father, Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), who has disregarded the existence of Lucas, his son by a one-time flame, Karen (Moira Kelly), whom he dumped years before to accept a basketball scholarship to college. While neglecting Lucas, Dan–whose hoop dreams never materialized–has spent his time almost perversely micro-managing every one of Nathans moves on and off the court at his old high school, where the lad is currently an arrogant superstar under gruff-but-wise coach Whitey Durham (Barry Corbin). Nathan (whose mother is separated from Dan) is a child of privilege and has been raised to disregard teamwork, compromise, or the feelings of others. He also turns to surrogate dad Keith Scott (Craig Sheffer)–actually his uncle and Dans older brother–for support, and sees himself as a perpetual and doomed outsider in One Tree. All that changes when Whitey invites Lucas to join the b-ball team that Nathan dominates, a move that challenges the status quo of multiple relationships in a small community. For about a third of its episodes, this series from creator Mark Schwahn (who wrote the hit film Coach Carter) stays true to the suspense surrounding Lucass and Nathans changes in fortune. Then a bit of padding follows to the end of the season; there are 22 episodes to fill out, after all. But even as various distractions (a kidnapping subplot, a car accident and coma for a major character) and random events creep in (Dan, rather incredibly, takes over the team from Whitey at one point, thus coaching both his sons), One Tree Hill remains highly watchable. What a surprise!
If you haven’t seen this show before, you are in for a treat! I bought this on a whim right after Thanksgiving because I am a sucker for Black Friday deals. I liked Dawson’s Creek growing up and thought this show would be similar, but it is SO MUCH better!!! The first couple of episodes are a little slow…but you will be hooked in no time! I’ve since bought seasons 2, 3 & 4 and can’t stop watching. I highly recommend this for teens and adults alike! The adults in OTH are just as much involved as the teens so don’t think of this as “just another teen show.” Here is a summary without spoilers: One Tree Hill is a small town that thrives on high school basketball games. The star player has a half-brother that his father wishes was never born & it throws both of them off track when he joins the basketball team. One Tree Hill deals with topics such as drinking, pregnancy, rape, etc. I promise you won’t be disappointed in your purchase, but beware: it is very, very addictive!!!

Everything heads, inexorably, toward graduation day, which finds several crises simultaneously overlapping with the joy of moving on. A great buy for a great show
I found this product to be worth my money, the case was in tip top condition. I didnt have any complaints with how any of the discs played as well. There wernt any scratches on any of them. I am a big One Tree Hill fan anway so of course I enjoyed my dvd set. Just a suggestion to others out there, wait until u find the One Tree Hill series to have their half off special. Thats when i bought my set, and it seemed to have saved me quite a bit of money. Season 4 is one of the better seasons, I beleive the characters start to finally come into there own.

Its goodbye to Capeside, hello to Boston in Dawsons Creeks fifth season (a.k.a.: Dawsons Creek: The College Years). While the end of the fourth season sent the five friends their separate ways–Dawson (James Van Der Beek) to USC Film School, Joey (Katie Holmes) to Worthington College, Jen (Michelle Williams) and Jack (Kerr Smith) to Boston Bay College; and Pacey (Joshua Jackson) to the high seas–it doesnt take them long to find themselves together again. Thats a good thing, especially when tragedy strikes a family member and threatens to tear the survivors apart.

More than anything, the fifth season seems to be about falling into bad relationships. Jen dates a cute but sleazy musician (Chad Michael Murray, One Tree Hill), Pacey gets a job in a restaurant where he pursues a woman (Lourdes Benedicto) already having an affair with a married man, then fends off a vampish new boss (Sherilyn Fenn, Twin Peaks). Joey is drawn to her handsome English professor (Ken Marino). And Jack joins a frat, becomes a jerk, and starts a devoted relationship with his beer bottle. Dawson meets an eccentric young filmmaker (Jordan Bridges) which in turn leads to a meeting with his favorite Boston film critic (Meredith Salenger). And Joeys new roommate, the annoyance-with-a-heart-of-gold Audrey (Busy Phillipps), becomes the newest major addition to the cast. The irritation factor is high this season, a couple of Joey is threatened interludes dont have the punch that they could have, and in the season finale, the inevitable resolution of the shows central relationship doesnt really resolve anything at all. But viewers who have followed the Capeside crew for four seasons will still want to see what happens in the fifth.

The fifth season is the first to have no DVD extras at all, and it continues the music-replacement strategy (which, since the second season has replaced much of the music, and since the third season has replaced Paula Coles theme song, all due to licensing expenses). In addition to the usual background-music switches, some scenes have been edited (for example, the episode Highway to Hell has cut two of the performances on-stage at the Drunk & Dead). Also, the opening credits of The Long Goodbye and Downtown Crossing had originally used instrumental versions of I Dont Want to Wait, which had underscored the emotion of those episodes. In the DVD set, those have been replaced by the standard version and an instrumental version, respectively, of Run Like Mad. –David Horiuchi

Coming of Age
I watched this show when it first came on but it got a little too soapy for me. But watching it as an adult has been a real eye opener. I can relate to everything and you really feel like you’re coming of age with the characters. Season 5 is unblelievable (Congrajulations Dawson)but you have to start the series from the begining to get the full effect.

The fact that Home of the Brave is about soldiers coming home from a war that isnt even over is just one of the things thats off in this film; director Irwin Winkler and screenwriter Mark Friedmans 2006 tale of the problems faced by the men and women returning from Iraq is also hampered by thoroughly predictable storytelling, sub-par acting, and sometimes painfully on-the-nose dialogue, reducing what could have been a provocative and challenging effort into so much TV movie fodder. When Army medic Will Marsh (Samuel L. Jackson, who does his best to rise above the level of the material) and soldiers Vanessa Price (Jessica Biel) and Tommy Yates (Brian Presley) return to Spokane, Washington, major readjustment problems loom, mostly due to a chaotic ambush in a small Iraqi town (occurring less than two weeks before they were to be sent home, the incident is so unsurprising that anyone could have seen it coming). Will and his angry teenage son wage their own war, while Dad takes to the bottle; Vanessas learning to cope with a prosthetic hand, while Tommys grieving over the best buddy who died in the ambush and the loss of his job, girlfriend, and self-respect. Those matters and the clichéd, unconvincing way in which theyre handled, along with the films refusal to take a strong stand either for or against the war, obscure the potentially much more interesting issues. Are these soldiers patriots, or merely pawns? Were they doing their righteous duty by serving in this conflict, or were they victims sent off to suffer and perhaps die by a bunch of men in suits who never saw a minute of combat themselves? Other home-from-war films, from 1946s The Best Years of Our Lives to 1978s Coming Home to 1989s Born on the Fourth of July, have dealt with these and other issues a good deal more effectively than the earnest and well-intentioned but not very compelling Home of the Brave. –Sam Graham
