One of the better spy thrillers of the 1970s
A top-notch espionage mystery very typical of Colin Forbes, whose plots keep one guessing until the very end as to the answers and outcomes of well-crafted characters. Set and written in 1975, an original idea is the focus for THE STONE LEOPARD. France is about to change its political leanings from NATO to Warsaw Pact. Guy Florian, the new French President lashes out at the ‘Americanisation’ of Europe and pledges loyalty to the eastern bloc. The French defence minister Alain Blanc is planning to oust him from power, but as Marc Grelle, the Prefect of Police in Paris investigates, he discovers something far more dangerous is afoot. A hostile naval task force reaches the Mediterranean, heading towards France and Spain. What is the significance of the LEOPARD, a World War 2 Resistance leader rumoured dead but still apparently alive? Inside all of this, Grelle discovers a conspiracy worse than Florian’s political leanings which could destabilise Europe as we know it. READ IT YESTERDAY AND IT WAS GREAT. REALLY COMPLEMENTED THE DARK CELEBRATION BOOK FROM LAST YEAR. BRINGS NEW ELEMENTS INTO THE WHOLE STORY LINE AND I LOOK FORWARD TO FUTURE BOOKS!

Another Excellent book in the series
I enjoyed this book it was great. Left open for more books in the future. I wish books came out sooner than 1x a year for these. It is hard to wait a year.

fresh and gender bending Carpathian thriller
The vampire hunter Ivory, and her seven Carpathian wolf pack and her normal wolf pack head home after killing two vampires only to find a dying man. To her horror she knows this Carpathian is her lifemate. He tells her to leave him die as the evil Xavier uses his body to cause death. He is Xavier’s grandson and sold his soul to save his daughter and sister. Ivory knocks him out and takes him to her hidden shelter while Xavier searches for Razvan. She will heal him and if he still chooses death, so be it.

Ivory sees a child tied in snares, which is a trap. With her wolves she kills a ghoul, but her brother master vampire Sergey escapes before the Carpathian healer Gregori and Prince Mikhail arrive. They offer to heal her, but she refuses as she wants nothing to do with Carpathians. Though not fully healed Razvan knows his lifemate is in trouble. She has given him hope that she can kill Xavier as she told him that is why she lives. Razvan arrives placing a knife to Mikhail’s neck. Mikhail calmly tells Gregori to heal Ivory. He does and is stunned that she was once sliced into many pieces and should be dead. Ivory and Gregori heal Razvan. She explains her only friends are the wolves as her brothers chose the power of the vampire and sacrificed her. Ivory and Razvan plan to kill Xavier or die trying.

The relationship between the lead couple is fresh and gender bending as she leads the excursions against Xavier. The Carpathian support cast is strong especially the wolf pack, the prince and the healer while the malevolent villain is brilliant using modern science as well as magic to attack his foes and the heroine’s brothers, though we meet only one of them, are pure evil. This is a super entry, which long time fans will enjoy including the addition of background information appendices though newcomers will feel awed by the Feehan mythos.

Typically, as a popular series advances the intrinsic center “charm” seems to fragment as the author tries valiantly to keep up his or her excitement in the story. (Uh, BDB ring a bell?)

In “Dark Slayer”…Christine Feehan comes back to what entranced us in the beginning….a species simply trying to survive. Granted these males are gorgeous, sexy and come built-in with speeches that bind a womans’ soul to theirs. They are gut-wrenchingly honorable..fighting vampires who were once the same as they were: Carpathian warriors.

In “Dark Slayer”, Ms. Feehan brings us back to this essential problem but twists it as the villian of several novels, Razvan the mage/Dragonseeker is shown to be a victim of an “immortal” wizard. Zavier, the ageless evil has to have Carpathian blood, preferably a family member, to continue his his seemingly endless persecution of Carpathians. Zavier wants them all to die in a revenge-ridden quest for absolute power.

Zavier captures and victimizes his grandson, Razvan, for hundreds of years, starving him and taking over his body to impregnate psychic women for the babies that carry a Carpathian blood supply.

Zavier used Razvan’s body in an earlier novel (Dark Demon) to attempt murder on Razvans’ sister Natalya.

After the latest destruction of one of Zaviers’ evil labratories, Razvan escapes into a blizzard half-naked, and starved for blood. Half mad with guilt and unable to process the searing evil of his life, Razan wants to die. So he wanders off into the woods collapsing in the snow….and waits for the morning sun.

Instead, another legend of the Carpathians: Ivory the presumed-dead sister of the evil Brother Malinov stumbles across Razvans’ body after a lengthy battle with vampires.

Hundreds of years earlier, Ivory was attacked and cut into pieces when she was betrayed to vampires by Zavier. Happily for Ivory, the vampires neglected to remove her heart…so the pieces of her body lay in a field while wolves chewed into her legs and arms. Ivory manages to put herself back together with the help of Mother Earth and, after lying in the earth for three hundred years Ivory begins her dreadful life’s mission to eradicate the evil Zavier by unraveling his spells and fighting vampires. She becomes another legend, the Dark Slayer.

Seeing Razvan’s crumpled body causes her great pain because she never dreamed of family or children. She was always alone except for the wolves she saved from death by sharing her blood and converting them to Carpathians. Yet, she recognizes Razvan’s importance to her…because he is the other half of her soul.

The love story is touching and well-linked to the story line. Familiar Carpathians and vampires return in this book. Skyler and Dimitri are still fighting their attraction now that Skyler is seventeen. The Dragonseeker “Aunts” are still healing in their earthen beds. Savannah gives birth to her twins. Mikail and Raven are pregnant again. All of the characters are consistent with prior novels but show real personal growth.

I won’t give away anymore….because this book deserves a thorough read.

I rate this one up there with the first book, “Dark Prince”.

This book is recommended as a “Keeper”.

A CHILLING TALE

enthralling thriller
A very ill man bleeding from many orifices goes to SNN Television network to talk to Nephilim Cotton Stone. With his last dying breath he mutters ” Black Needles”. His body disappears before an autopsy occurs; the mortuary that picked his corpse up is nowhere to be found.

A woman in West Virginia dies from the same virus and her body also goes missing. In the Brazilian Rain Forest a woman of the Yanomomo tribe contacts the virus.

A man falls from a cathedral under construction. It’s dark, it’s late but there is a witness where no witness should be. The witness warily goes to the dying man and hears his last words-then runs for his life. He is now a new target for the assassin.

Jacob the Fox, named for his blazing red hair, is fast and quick-witted but is too easily identified by his hair. He lives by stealing and scrounging what he can to eat, and lives under the arch of the great wall that surrounds Cologne, Germany in 1260. He knows when and where to hide from irate merchants but this new threat appears to function outside mortal capabilities.

Finally, injured and hurt, and against his better judgment, he seeks help from Richmodis, a cloth dyer’s daughter who had been kind to him earlier. When Jacob tells his story to Richmodis, her father and her uncle, a physician and a professor of cannon law, become unlikely allies in the dangerous task of discovering why Urquhart, the assassin, has come to Cologne, who has brought him here and who is the ultimate target. The people behind Urquhart are powerful, ruthless and willing to sacrifice lives to achieve their goal and Cologne becomes their hunting ground.

This is an engrossing mystery and suspense story that weaves in the political and philosophical thinking of the period along with a portrait of the time. Author Schatzing gives historical background that adds atmosphere and weight to the plot and gives it credibility.

This novel was published in Germany in 2003 and was first for this author who has since won several book awards in his country. Death and the Devil has just been translated into English and readers of this book will be very grateful.

Bad translation
Having read this book in german and in english I might say the translation into the english version is a poor and very clumsy one. I can only hope this won’t keep people away from reading further translations.

But however, reading over this sad choice of wording in the translation (it’s not the whole book that suffers from that) helps a lot and makes a fabulous, inspiring and suspenseful mystery.
