KORSUN POCKET THE The Encirclement and Breakout of a German Army in the East 1944 by Anders Frankson

Why Buy A KORSUN POCKET THE The Encirclement and Breakout of a German Army in the East 1944 by Anders Frankson?
During the second half of 1943, after the failure at Kursk, Germanys Army Group South fell back from Russia under repeated hammer blows from the Red Army. Under Erich von Manstein, however, the Germans were able to avoid serious defeats, while at the same time fending off Hitlers insane orders to hold on to useless territory. Then, in January 1944, a disaster happened. Six divisions of Army Group South became surrounded after sudden attacks by the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts under command of generals Nikolai Vatutin and Ivan Konev around the village of Korsun (near the larger town of Cherkassy on the Dnieper). The Germans greatest fear was the prospect of another Stalingrad, the catastrophe that had occurred precisely one year before. This time, though, Manstein was in control from the start, and he immediately rearranged his Army Group to rescue his trapped divisions. A major panzer drive got underway, led by General der Panzertruppen Hans Hube, a survivor from Stalingrad pocket, which promptly ran up against several soviet tank armies. Leading the break-in was Franz Baeke with his Tiger and Panther-tanks. Due to both weather and ferocious resistance, the German drive stalled. Ju-52s still flew into Korsuns airfield, delivering supplies and taking out wounded, but it soon became apparent that only one option remained for the beleaguered defenders: breakout.Without consulting Hitler, on the night of February 16 Manstein ordered the breakout to begin. Led by the strongest formation within the pocket, SS Wiking, the trapped forces surged out and soon rejoined the surrounding panzer divisions who had been fully engaged in weakening the ring. When dawn broke, the Soviets realized their prey was escaping. Although the Germans within the pocket lost nearly all of their heavy weapons and left many wounded behind, their escape was effected. Stalin, having anticipated another Stalingrad, was left with little but an empty bag, as Army Group South-this time-had pulled off a rescue. In The Korsun Pocket, Niklas Zetterling, a researcher at the Swedish Defense College since 1995 and Anders Frankson, have provided a highly detailed and often breathtaking account of one of the most dramatic battles of World War II. From grand strategy to soldiers voices on the ground, including expert statistical analysis, the action, and the stakes, of the battle at Korsun are made vividly clear. My Name Is Anne She Said Anne Frank The Memoirs of Anne Franks Best Friend by Jacqueline van Maarsen – Save 15% Today!

My Name Is Anne She Said Anne Frank The Memoirs of Anne Franks Best Friend by Jacqueline van Maarsen

Why Buy A My Name Is Anne She Said Anne Frank The Memoirs of Anne Franks Best Friend by Jacqueline van Maarsen?
A touching and intimate autobiography, this account recalls the author’s remarkable childhood friendship with Anne Frank while attending a special school for Jewish children in Amsterdam during the late 1930s. With the story of her initial meeting and bonding with Anne Frank, Jacqueline van Maarsen’s memoir recollects her family’s near escape from the Netherlands only months after the Frank family went into hiding—or moved to Switzerland, as van Maarsen was lead to believe—and provides a revealing look into life under Nazi occupation. Written by a one-time friend who only discovered the truth about Anne’s fate after the war ended, this memoir is a moving, firsthand recollection of a youthful friendship in the foreboding days of World War II.

Outstanding contribution to (further) understanding Anne Frank
Jacqueline van Maarsen is a contemporary of Anne Frank, and only in recent years has begun speaking out more and more about her experiences and interaction with Anne Frank. This book was originally published in the Netherlands in 2003, and now is finally available in the US.

“My Name is Anne, She Said, Anne Frank” (176 pages) is structured in 3 parts: Parts 1 and 3 deal with her mom and dad, respectively, and Part 2, by far the longest, deal with her own experiences living in the years leading up to the war, the war time itself with the occupation of Amsterdam by the Germans, and the aftermath of the war. The author, who is half-Jewish, brings us fascinating insights on what life really was like in those dark days of the late 30 and the 1940s. The author became best friends with Anne, and spent a lot of time with her in the years until Anne and her family went in hiding in the summer of 1942. There are some descriptions in the book regarding her friendship with Anne that I felt were almost too close for comfort. The author never saw Anne again after the Frank family went into hiding (and eventually was betrayed–it’s still not clear by whom), but brings us touching, even heart-breaking, descriptions on her post-war dealings with Otto Frank, Anne’s father (and the sole survivor of the Frank family). She writes: “He often wept when he was with me. I didn’t know how to deal with that.” Wow… how could a 16-17 yr old child bring comfort to Anne’s dad?

Anne Frank’s contributions to history and her influence continue to this day, not only through the on-going sales of her diaries, but also as a result of the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam (which I’ve had a chance to visit and will readily recommend to anyone). Meanwhile, “My Name is Anne, She Said, Anne Frank” is a nice addition to understanding not only the context of Anne Frank better, but even more importantly, to also better understand what life was really like, and the unspeakable crime that was the holocaust, which nevertheless must be spoken about for the sake of our children and our children’s children. Highly recommended!

Plutonium A History of the Worlds Most Dangerous Element by Jeremy Bernstein – Save 32% Today!

Plutonium A History of the Worlds Most Dangerous Element by Jeremy Bernstein

Why Buy A Plutonium A History of the Worlds Most Dangerous Element by Jeremy Bernstein?
When plutonium was first manufactured at Berkeley in the spring of 1941, there was so little of it that it was not visible to the naked eye. It took a year to accumulate enough so that one could actually see it. Now so much has been produced that we dont know what to do to get rid of it. We have created a monster.

The history of plutonium is as strange as the element itself. When scientists began looking for it, they did so simply in the spirit of inquiry, not certain whether there were still spots to fill on the periodic table. But the discovery of fission made it clear that this still-hypothetical element would be more than just a scientific curiosity-it could be the main ingredient of a powerful nuclear weapon.

As it turned out, it is good for almost nothing else. Plutoniums nuclear potential put it at the heart of the World War II arms race-the Russians found out about it through espionage, the Germans through independent research, and everybody wanted some. Now it is warehoused around the world-the United States alone possesses about forty-seven metric tons-but it has almost no practical use outside its role in nuclear weaponry. How did the product of scientific curiosity become such a dangerous burden?

In his history of this complex and dangerous element, noted physicist Jeremy Bernstein describes the steps that were taken to transform plutonium from a laboratory novelty into the nuclear weapon that destroyed Nagasaki. This is the first book to weave together the many strands of plutoniums story, explaining not only the science but also the people involved.

Completely engrossing!
This is one of the most technically challenging books I have ever read- the element plutonium never ceases to amaze me- it goes through the complete history of the element, from conception to vaporization, and everything in between- I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in nuclear engineering~

Very good!
Even if you have no interest in science related books, this is a must-read one. The author/witness describes how the knowledge of fussion became known and how the scientists have perfected the bombs. It is a good reading that do not require previous readings.

Where To Buy The God of Chaos by Tom Bradby At The Lowest Price?

The God of Chaos by Tom Bradby

Why Buy A The God of Chaos by Tom Bradby?
1942. The Nazi hammer is about to fall on the beleaguered city of Cairo. As tension mounts, a key British officer is found brutally murdered. Nobody can fathom the motives behind the killing, and it is certainly the wrong time to
start asking questions.

Former New York cop Joe Quinn is a maverick whose methods run against the grain of the British military police. But he is tasked with uncovering the truth and in spite of the circumstances determines to do so — in his own way. Is this
merely a straightforward case of espionage or something rather more intimate?

Page turner
For those who like a good mystery with a little history mixed in, this was an enjoyable read. I had never heard of the author but thought the book looked interesting while searching the English section of a German book store. It didn’t take long to get into and I found myself still reading as my plane pulled up at the gate in Washington, D.C.

I love to read but with 3 kids, if a book doesn’t keep me going, I move on to the next one. This was one of the best I’d read in awhile with interesting characters and a well paced plot. Can’t wait to read his others…

Be Sure to Read This One!
The first of Bradby’s novels that I read was The White Russian, which I really enjoyed. The God of Chaos is the second I’ve read, and it’s even better. Bradby really introduces the reader to the sights, sounds, and even the smells of Cairo in 1942. In addition he also is very good in tightening the tension and fear (or hopes) of the city’s inhabitants on the brink of the battle of Al-Alamein–even the British expecting that the Germans will win–even getting the reader to forget what she knows about history. On top of all of this Bradby adds the murder of a key British intelligence officer, the first of a series. The Royal Military Police officer assigned to the case is an American, who lost his job with the NYPD for digging too deeply into matters the powers that be wanted hidden. He’s tackling the murder case(s) in Cairo exactly the same way, even when everyone tells him “Why bother? The Germans will be here shortly.” There are enough red herrings here to stock an aquarium. The identity of the ultimate villain is a shocker. Be sure to read this one. I can’t recommend it enough.
