Her by Laura Zigman

Why Buy A Her by Laura Zigman?
The problem with most of the post-Bridget Jones fiction is that the dithering heroines tend to inspire impatience rather than sympathy, but in the novel Her, Laura Zigman skillfully avoids that common pitfall. Elise is engaged to be married to Donald. Displaced New Yorkers living in Washington, D.C., they bond over the foibles of life in the capital: pundits at the grocery store, power brokers at the baggage claim. Donald seems a truly amiable fellow, a fine fictional creation worth fighting over. Enter the titular her, Donalds ex-girlfriend Adrienne, a dark beauty whos catty and gracefully catlike all at once. When Adrienne relocates from New York to D.C., Elise fights a pitched battle over the hapless Donald, who of course has no idea of the warfare on his behalf. Unfortunately, Elise can be so insecure and jealous that the reader guiltily begins to root for Adrienne–at least shes got a little self-respect. Such is the power of romantic formula, however, that when it all comes right for Donald and Elise, we close the book with a satisfied feeling. –Claire Dederer

Democracy by Joan Didion – Save 20% Today!

Democracy by Joan Didion

Why Buy A Democracy by Joan Didion?
Moving between Honolulu, Jakarta and Saigon, against the historical backdrop of the final withdrawal from Vietnam, this novel is a bitingly funny, cumulatively devastating post-mortem of our national mores and institutions. A U.S. Senator, his wife, senatorial groupies and international arms dealing intersect with one another in this blistering indictment of American amnesia.

Exceptional
Didion has a unique, powerful style. It reminds me of Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 in its irony and suppressed rage, but Didion’s prose is just so elegant. “Democracy” is both a romantic and a political novel, with both themes beautifully intertwined. This is an exceptional work. Didion’s heroine reminds one of several of her other heroines, coming from a background where she is expected to be an adornment and where the strains of playing that role take a psychological toll. In Democracy, the heroine is psychologically stronger than in some of the other novels, plays on a larger canvas, and is ultimately able to more successfully express her inner strengths and morality. Interestingly, Didion injects herself into the novel as the narrator, and yes, Didion did work briefly at Vogue, and of course was both a reporter and a novelist. My guess is that the conceit of starting to write one novel, and ultimately writing a different one, was probably accurate.

A Must-Read for Anne Fans
This book is a prequel to the Anne of Green Gables (currently 8, soon-to-be 9-book series). It was not, of course, written by L.M. Montgomery, the beloved author of Anne. Still, if you love Anne as much as I do, you really have to read this book for yourself. It’s a fascinating look at what Anne’s life might have been like before Matthew picked her up at the Bright River train station.

I was determined not to hate the book – since it’s Anne, but I determined to find fault as well. Surely no one could perfectly capture Montgomery’s style and voice. But more importantly, I was sure no reader views Anne exactly the same way and that Budge Wilson wouldn’t possibly write her to my satisfaction. I was very pleasantly surprised.

The book starts at the very beginning while Bertha Shirley is barely pregnant. The language in this first part wasn’t much like Montgomery’s style – who, for instance, would never have mentioned a woman’s “monthlies”. As Anne grew older, the language became much more like Montgomery, particularly in her love for nature, and for beauty in the world and in people. Watching Anne’s imagination develop was fascinating.

I was a bit thrown by the people in Anne’s life who were dear to her, kind to her, and gave her gifts. This didn’t quite seem in keeping with the “skinny, love-starved waif” Marilla felt compelled to help. Wilson tries to explain that Anne closed the chapter on her old life before meeting Matthew and Marilla, but that felt a little contrived. I also read a review that complained about Anne’s love for the sea in this book and apparent tiring of living among trees. I have to agree. Anne adored trees more than anything in nature, and didn’t realize how much the sea meant to her until she lived very near it in Anne’s House of Dreams. These were my only major complaints.

Budge Wilson really did a beautiful, thorough job of exploring this season in Anne’s life. Anne fans may find fault here and there – because, as I said, none of us see her exactly the same way. But if you love Anne, you should read this book and at least consider its pieces as possible contributions to the character and personality Anne had developed by the time we officially met her.

Before Green Gables – Excellent Read
I thought this author did and excellent job on writing what Anne’s life was like before Green Gables.

Oh! How exquisite!
Budge Wilson has truly captured the heart of Anne Shirley and the thoughts of Lucy Montgomery. This novel fits in with the best of the Green Gables novels- the ones before Anne got married and completely changed character. This is an Anne learning to love and imagine, to seek out joy and look for the good. It is the part of Anne’s life we didn’t realize was missing until we read it. Unlike Anne Rice’s Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, Wilson is able to convincingly share the thoughts of a young child in elevated prose, without having to resort to childish sentence construction.

While the book starts off slowly with the focus on Anne’s parents before her birth, this background is revealed as necessary to understand the psychology of Anne. Afterward, we are gradually immersed in the magical world of Anne Shirley, coming to understand how such an exquisite child could come to be. It so seems like Lucy Montgomery is writing, that one is tempted to think this is true ghost authorship. If you loved the original series, you must read this prequel.

Where To Buy The Third Sister A Continuation of Jane Austens Sense and Sensibility by Julia Barrett At The Lowest Price?

The Third Sister A Continuation of Jane Austens Sense and Sensibility by Julia Barrett

Why Buy A The Third Sister A Continuation of Jane Austens Sense and Sensibility by Julia Barrett?
Only a writer with considerable skill and a fair amount of confidence would dare a sequel to Jane Austens Sense and Sensibility, especially given the renewed interest in her work, not to mention her status as a classic author. But Julia Barrett, whose Presumption was a sequel to Pride and Prejudice, has produced a novel that pays homage to Austen by following her style while not mimicking it. Her heroines are smart and well-mannered (including cameos by some of Austens originals), the pace is quick yet controlled, and the story lines, while echoing Austens style and tête-à-têtes between characters, are innovative.
