Can friendships survive gossip?
Holly Keller’s HELP: A STORY OF FRIENDSHIP tells of Mouse and his very different friends who get along well – until Mouse hears from a mutual friend that his snake friend may be dangerous. Can friendships survive gossip? When Mouse is indeed endangered, danger – and rescue – come from unexpected places in this gentle story.

Books for early readers
One five year old twin granddaughter had selected Help!: A Story of Friendship to give to her school library on her birthday. But on that morning she changed her mind and decided to give the school a different choice. It’s a cute story with a wonderful message that rings truer to me than ones from Dora or Hannah Montana. It would no doubt be a good addition to the Obamas library. Who knows, maybe it would be a book that Sarah Palin wanted banned. The list of banned books posted on our library’s door right now includes all the Harry Potter series, which got so so many young people turned onto reading, and a slew of other well written jewels. Hope Holly Keller will keep writing*****

A read-aloud favorite!
My sister gave this book to my four-year-old daughter last year, and it has quickly become one of our favorites. It’s sweet, simple, and endearing, and has a wonderful message. Plus, there is a lot of dialog between the animal characters, which invites the reader to use silly voices, and makes it a fun read-aloud. My daughter shared it with her preschool class one day, and the teacher said it’s become a class favorite as well.

Help! book
This book is age appropriate, eye catching, and has a wonderful moral! As a teacher, I would say this is a must-buy!

I’m a second grade teacher and luckily I found this book to talk about trust, gossiping and friendship with my children. amazing effect! They even wanted to create a role play based on the book!! I really enjoyed the movie. I was completely entertained from opening to closing credits! I think it’s about time that a movie was created to give a male perspective of relationships from a woman’s point of view!!

Grreat chill movie!
This movie was great! I didn’t expect much and I was very surprised to find that it was better than I thought. It’s a good rainy day movie that you watch when you are in the mood for a lighthearted romantic comedy. Definitely worth getting.

Turner Without Reservations starring John Wayne Claudette Colbert – Save 11% Today!

Without Reservations starring John Wayne Claudette Colbert

Why Buy A Without Reservations starring John Wayne Claudette Colbert?
Silver-screen darling Claudette Colbert plays Kit Madden, a novelist en route to Hollywood, where his latest hit is to be filmed. On the train she meets two military men, Rusty Thomas (John Wayne) and Dink Watson (Don Defore). Without knowing Madden s identity, both men declaim her novel. Even so, Colbert thinks Thomas is perfect for the lead in the film, and when the two men change trains in Chicago, Madden changes with them, leaving her luggage behind. Ticketless, she is tossed from the train, but not before she and Thomas have developed a drunken camaraderie and expressed their affections for each other. Both men decide to exit the train with her and resume their travel to California in a rented car. But when Madden s identity is exposed, Thomas feels betrayed and leaves her in New Mexico, and it s up to mutual friend Watson to see if he can reunite the two lovebirds. WITHOUT RESERVATIONS was an unusual film for both Wayne and Colbert, and their fine performances are a tribute to the range of their acting abilities.

A wonderful and entertaining film!
I would highly recommend this film to anyone. It’s funny romantic, and a very entertaining story starring John Wayne and
Claudette Colbert. They both make a great pair in the film. It’s a real classic.

Withour Reservations
Very good. Funny. I would recommend this. Typical John Wayne. Not his western style but his army style.

A hidden classic!
This movie is a hidden classic and has to be one of John Wayne’s more delightful roles. It also stars Claudette Colbert and Dan DeFore. You gotta see this one!

The Cambridge Companion to Charles Dickens Cambridge Companions to Literature – Save 10% Today!

The Cambridge Companion to Charles Dickens Cambridge Companions to Literature

Why Buy A The Cambridge Companion to Charles Dickens Cambridge Companions to Literature?
The Cambridge Companion to Charles Dickens contains fourteen chapters by leading international scholars that cover the whole range of Dickens writing. Separate chapters address important thematic topics: childhood, the city, and domestic ideology. Others consider formal features of the novels, including their serial publication and Dickens distinctive use of language. The volume as a whole offers a valuable introduction to Dickens for students and general readers, as well as fresh insights, informed by recent critical theory, that will be of interest to scholars and teachers of his novels.

Indispensible!
Whether you read Dickens for your own enjoyment or for academic pursuits, you will find this book invaluable. What I like most about this “Companion” is that its fourteen chapters provide new, brilliant, and thought-provoking “lenses” through which to view his novels as I re-read them, as I have done countless times in the last half-century. My favorite Dickens’ novels are “Our Mutual Friend” and “Great Expectations,” so I eagerly chose Chapter 6, Brian Cheadle’s “The late novels: “Great Expectations” and “Our Mutual Friend” to read first. What delight! Cheadle’s essay alone is worth the price of this book. This “Companion” does not disappoint.

Good guide to what’s new with Dickens
This provides some interesting critical essays of recent scholarship on Dickens work. A must have for any student of Dickens.

The Charles Dickens Collection, Vol. 1 (Oliver Twist / Martin Chuzzlewit / Bleak House / Hard Times / Great Expectations / Our Mutual Friend) starring Paul McGann, Keeley Hawes, Gerry Sundquist, Jason Smart, Derek Francis

Why Buy A The Charles Dickens Collection, Vol. 1 (Oliver Twist / Martin Chuzzlewit / Bleak House / Hard Times / Great Expectations / Our Mutual Friend) starring Paul McGann, Keeley Hawes, Gerry Sundquist, Jason Smart, Derek Francis?
As can be clearly seen from the care lavished on these six BBC adaptions of Charles Dickens novels, the British love their Dickens! And why not–Dickens is ideally suited to television, with his elaborate but vigorous plots, each a compendium of comically odious personalities (and one or two nice folk, just to keep things from getting too awful). Actors dig into these meaty roles with zeal, delighting in the hairpin turns from macabre horror to sweet sentiment. The more popular (and most frequently adapted) of the books at hand–Great Expectations and Oliver Twist–are the most conventional. The 1981 mini-series Expectations (in which young Pip learns the pitfalls of wealth through his relationship with the rich and bitter Mrs. Havishamand and her warped ward, Estella) is dutiful to its source but not adapted with much inspiration. Twist, from 1985, fares better; its a zippy treatment of this tale of childhood deprivation and juvenile delinquency, and the horrors of Victorian orphanages will raise your hackles. The adaptation is capable but a little flat–still, any story where an undertaker observes, Every tear is another shilling in the till, is clearly not lacking in wicked wit.

Fortunately, the others are considerably juicier: Martin Chuzzlewit, a lesser-known but richly satirical book, has a star-studded production from 1994, featuring Paul Scofield, Tom Wilkinson, Pete Postlethwaite, and Julia Sawalha, among others. The wealthy Martin Chuzzlewit, deeply suspicious of all mankind due to being hounded by greedy, grasping relatives, threatens the happiness of his ward Mary and his namesake grandson. In addition to the sterling and energetic cast, Chuzzlewit has outstanding production values, as does the 1998 version of Our Mutual Friend, which goes to great lengths to evoke the textures of life in Dickens London. The mysterious death of a man about to inherit a great fortune sets in motion a complex plot that intertwines two love stories (its one of Dickens most romantic works), social scheming, and murderous obsession. The names arent quite as famous (such as Paul McGann, Timothy Spall, Anna Friel, and Keeley Hawes), but the performances are top-notch and the script is particularly dynamic.

Bleak House, a Kafka-esque story of young innocents caught in an all-consuming, multi-generational lawsuit, cultivates a rich and potent Gothic horror; the 19th century seems like an unnerving alien world, through which lawyers and policemen stride like cruel predators. Diana Rigg is the most famous face in this 1985 production, but strong performances abound. The final component of this box set is the most curious: A 1994 version of Hard Times starring Alan Bates and Richard E. Grant, which turns this dark story–about a schoolmaster/politician who raises his children on reason at the expense of all feeling and finally reaps the bitter rewards–into a compact, theatrical feature film thats so swift its almost jaunty. Adapted and directed by Peter Barnes (writer of The Ruling Class), its the most stylized production of the bunch, and while lacking the depth and narrative detail of the others, it effectively cuts to the essence of Dickens. –Bret Fetzer

I am reading Charles Dickens from his first book on and after I finish reading one of his books, I watch the DVD on that book from this collection. These DVD’s are real close to the books. This is a very good collection!

Brilliant
I am certainly glad that the BBC didn’t give us “high paced” cut-down versions of Dickens’ novels–as one Amazon reviewer suggested would have improved these. In fact, the films follow the novels closely, with all of Dickens’ quirky characters, such as Jaggers and Wemmick from “Great Expectations.”

Dickens had his faults, to be sure, but they are faults of the period in which they were written, e.g., the over-use of coincidences to tighten the plots, being the greatest fault to a 21st century reader/viewer. However, Dickens’ sense of time and place and his creation of memorable characters far overshadow this and make his works delightful.

The production values, the acting, the sets are first-rate in these productions. But if you want car chases and sex scenes, you may want to look elsewhere. Try the James Bond films.
