Why Buy A Under the Blood-Red Sun by Graham Salisbury?
Tomi was born in Hawaii. His grandfather and parents were born in Japan, and came to America to escape poverty.

World War II seems far away from Tomi and his friends, who are too busy playing ball on their eighth-grade team, the Rats.

But then Pearl Harbor is attacked by the Japanese, and the United States declares war on Japan. Japanese men are rounded up, and Tomi’s father and grandfather are arrested. It’s a terrifying time to be Japanese in America. But one thing doesn’t change: the loyalty of Tomi’s buddies, the Rats.

Becoming a Young Man
My favorite book that I read this year for Paces PAidiea is Under the Blood-Red Sun by Graham Salisbury. It tells the story of a Japanese boy named Tomi who lives in Hawaii. One day Japanese airplanes bomb Pearl Harbor, causing great fear and anger towards the Japanese-Americans living there. Now it is up to Tomi and his friends to stop this nonsense and restore peace to their community. To see if Tomi can accomplish this, you must read the book for yourself.
This book magnifies examples of one of the fourteen ideas, becoming, that I’ve learned about by using the Paces PAideia study guide for this book. Including elements like vocabulary, homework items, and journal entries, the Paces study guide for Under the Blood Red Sun enhanced my understanding of this historical fiction paperback. Anyone looking for action and adventure should read this marvelous book.

Tomi and the War
The book, Under the Blood Red Sun, is an historical fiction book that tells how some Japanese were treated during the war in Pearl Harbor. This book is a chilling and thrilling book that has action in every page. Tomi struggles losing his dad and then his grandpa yet his friends keep him joyful by keeping his mind on playing baseball. I feel if he did not lose his dad and grandpa, Tomi would not have become a working man at an early age. I recommend a PACES Study Guide to go along with the book which helped me learn more about the author and more about that time period. There are vocabulary words each week that help you understand new words that relate to the Japanese culture and traditions and their language. Each week has a parent discussion which helps students expand their minds even more. If you like historic fiction you will enjoy this book.

This is a good book for children who show an interest in all the WWII movies that are out at this time.

Under the Blood Red Sun
Under the Blood Red Sun

In the award winning novel Under the Blood Red Sun written by Graham Salisbury, a 13-year-old boy named Tomikazu is playing baseball when the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor starts. The attack destroys buildings and homes. This attack causes Tomi’s friends to start working, which leads to the cancellation of Tomi’s major baseball game. When Tomi’s father and grandfather are captured and held in camps by the army, Tomi tries to go and see his father. Will he be caught by the army or not? You will have to read this incredible, and very detailed, book to find out.

An event that takes place when the attack is just starting is: Tomi’s grandfather dashes outside with a Japanese flag waving up and down and all around himself, hoping that the Japanese planes would know that Tomi’s family is Japanese also. When the attack finally ceases, soldiers arrive at Tomi’s house questioning Tomi, Tomi’s grandfather, and his best friend Billy. Billy seems very nervous and maybe he is going to tell. Will Tomi and his family be caught? Or will Billy keep the secret?

Another event in this novel is when the attack happens; Tomi and his family must ration all that they have. At one point in this book, Tomi’s family runs out of kerosene. What will happen to them? The final event that I will tell you about is when Tomi’s friends are going to play baseball, there is a group of kids who trying to fight with Tomi and his friends. Tomi’s friends stand up to the kids, but what will happen to them?

This incredible book would not have been as enjoyable as it was without the PACES/ PAIDEIA study Guide. It helped me understand the words I did not know in it. It also had questions that really made me think a lot more about this book.

Building Nothing Out Of Something by Modest Mouse – Save 7% Today!

Building Nothing Out Of Something by Modest Mouse

Why Buy A Building Nothing Out Of Something by Modest Mouse?
Loneliness, boredom, and random observations have been at the heart of Modest Mouses skewered musical universe through all their releases. The Issaquah, Washington-born trio has also been able to spin very-long-playing albums that catered to the groups core obsessions, with both its full-length Up Records releases–This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and The Lonesome Crowded West clocking in at more than 70 minutes in length. So its refreshing to hear this supremely odd rock band at its most economical. Building Nothing Out of Something catches singles, compilation tunes, and more–none of which were ever intended to be sequenced as an album. As a narrative whole, the singles take on a visionary quality, discerning worldly, bent revelations in the everyday world. The swervy vocals that Isaac Brock has made his trademark sound as languidly distressed as ever, stricken by marvel and ghastly awakenings in equal measures. The music serves Brock well, sounding wobbly and sturdy at once, as if it barely teeters on chaoss brink at a variety of mostly midtempo paces. Never Ending Math Equation, A Life of Arctic Sounds, and Other Peoples Lives play the most stoutly, with the tonally clean guitars breaking across all the angular phrasings and rhythms Modest Mouse thrive on while Brocks voice goes from warpy drollery to exasperated wail in the face of his task as a singer and writer. –Andrew Bartlett

“I think about the pavement to avoid premature….”
This is another great album from Modest Mouse that is just bottom line entertaining and surreal. So ecclectic and weird. Drug fueled? Perhaps. But I think its well worth the price of admission!

highpoints of the highpoints
best modest mouse album. if you do not have it, get it! yeah buddy!

Spent 18 hours waiting Stoned for Space
I spent the same 18 in the same d*mn place. I’m on a road shaped like a figure 8/I’m going nowhere but I’m guaranteed to be late.

That is my favorite song on this album. The lyrics, vocals, guitar playing all mesh into something great. And a lot of Modest Mouse fans dislike ‘Good News’ but that and my 9th grade math teacher(long story) got me into Mouse and they are now my favorite band. Every song is different and great and just buy the cd. Great band.

Why am I even writing this?
It’s 2008- and I am reviewing such an old album, but that’s just because this album is classic. Many people seem to think the Moon and Antarctica is their best album, but this album and the lonesome crowded west are their most powerful pieces of work, I.M.H.O. This group is ill. Period. I wish they would go back to this album and make another that sounds just like it- but you can’t go back, only forward.

Irresistible
I truly loved the creativity and humor from the beginning to the end of Pippi in the South Seas by Astrid Lindgren. This story, about an irresistible girl with two red pony tails and lots of freckles, takes the reader on voyage to the exciting island of Kurrekurredutt. I especially liked Pippi’s loyalty to her friends, her imagination, charm, and wit. This story of wonder teaches children and adults to always help others and keep imagining. Undoubtedly, the PACES PAideia Study Guide for this book helped me understand the story better. The Parent Questions and Homework Questions in the Study Guide gave my mother and me good ideas to talk about. The Journals made me write about Pippi in my own words. As an eleven year old, I found this book extremely entertaining.

Pippi deals with adults by speaking double-talk and changing the subject, the fantasy of children everywhere
Pippi Longstocking is one of the most delightful characters to ever appear in children’s books. She is a small girl with pigtails who is the only human living in her house. Her father is the king of the Pacific island of Kurrekurredutt and she lives with her animals. She has pigtails, freckles and is incredibly strong. Tommy and Annika are her friends whose parents let her play with Pippi all the time.
Some people may consider the Pippi books to be inappropriate for children, since Pippi does not go to school and lives a carefree life of perpetual childhood. I don’t agree with this opinion, the book is fantasy and Pippi is so full of non sequiters when she speaks that the book is clearly not to be taken seriously.
In this story, Pippi’s father arrives to take Pippi to visit his kingdom of Kurrekurredutt. Tommy and Annika go with her and they have many great adventures. Pearls are plentiful in the waters around the island and the children have no trouble finding enough to play games of marbles. Two evil men land on the island and try to steal the pearls away. Pippi simply throws the men out onto the rocks and then into the sea, where they swim to their boat and are never heard from again.
The book is loaded with metaphors for the relationship between children and adults. Pippi simply deals with each situation with an adult by performing double-talk or changing the subject. This naturally annoys the adults, but is a natural turnaround for children. The reasons adults give to children when explaining what is happening often appears as double-talk, so this is just a reversal of roles.
I enjoyed this book immensely, reading it as a fantasy where a child remains a child, and talks strangely to adults. To children, that is often what adults seem to be doing to them.

GREAT GAME!!!
This game is great on one or two player mode, but I prefer playing two player all day with my dad because I kick his butt easily but he wins once in a blue moon. The bottom line is this game will give you hours of fun, so I recommend this game.

Still My Favorite
Obviously this game is very old, especially by PS2 standards. However it is the one hockey game I come back to time after time. Why? You can TWEAK this game to create one of the most fast paces, high energy, fun hockey experiences ever. Simply adjusting the play speed, hard hits, the speed of the puck, etc to the maximum levels, you will see what I mean. I have been playing Playstation hockey since Faceoff 98 and all the way up to this year. I’ve played em’ all and I just can’t get enough of this one. For me, it’s exactly what I want in a hockey game. Get one, it’s obviously like a dollar right now, take it home and tweak it to the max. You’ll see what I mean. An amazing, fun and unrealistic game!

Already have my copy!!!
Okay, how am I reviewing this DVD before its release date?

To be frank, I purchased this two disc set directly from A&E Home Video Store at a higher price about a month ago and found it to be one of the most watchable, entertaining, and fascinating looks into the true crime
genre that A&E and Discovery have been producing over the past twenty years.

You can feel the frustration, the sense of impending danger, the disappointments, and the heartfelt emotions of these young American rookie police officers as they are individually put through the paces of a patrol officer by their “FTO’s” [field training officers].

You will find yourself laughing, cringing, and even questioning your own sensibilities as to how YOU would handle some of these everyday situations that face the everyday street cop on the beat.

Between “Brooklyn Homicide North”, the newly released “Crime 360″ and now this series, “The Rookies”, these television DVD’s will be long remembered as the Golden Era of True Crime documentary entertainment.
