The Amazing Dr Clitterhouse VHS starring Edward G Robinson Humphrey Bogart Claire Trevor Allen Jenkins Donald Crisp

Why Buy A The Amazing Dr Clitterhouse VHS starring Edward G Robinson Humphrey Bogart Claire Trevor Allen Jenkins Donald Crisp?
A stylish, often amusing crime drama, this 1938 feature revolves around a central, improbable plot twist that consciously serves its casting against type: as the eponymous doctor, Edward G. Robinson, who had helped define the Warner Bros. style for gritty gangster sagas, jettisons his signature snarl in favor of a plummy, vaguely English accent that underlines his urbane sophistication. Dr. Clitterhouse is a creature of privilege who embarks on a criminal life not out of desperation, but rather through intellectual curiosity; instead of slouch hats and suits, he has marcelled hair and first appears in white tie and tails. He begins pulling off perfect jewel thefts as research into the criminal mind, but his gradual immersion in New Yorks shadowy demimonde of thieves and fences eventually finds the good doctor between those two worlds.

Robinsons principal foils stick closer to their studio strong suits. Humphrey Bogart is Rocks Valentine, a sturdy if familiar variation on the hoods and have-nots that were his early stock in trade at the studio. Bogarts fence and former paramour is Jo Keller, played by Claire Trevor as glamorous, streetwise, and otherwise decent, apart from her knack for larceny. When the doctor asks her to fence his glittering contraband, shes intrigued, and Clitterhouse, known to the hoods only as the Professor, becomes their strategist. Jo is clearly falling for him, while Rocks is visibly jealous of the fastidious strangers rising influence and romantic rivalry.

In keeping with its ultimately goofy premise, the story navigates some eccentric plot turns with an aplomb that can be credited to the solid cast (including other studio stalwarts such as Allen Jenkins, Ward Bond, and Donald Crisp) and the three principals, who would work off each other to much more riveting effect a decade later in Key Largo. –Sam Sutherland

Life with My Sister Madonna by Wendy Leigh

Why Buy A Life with My Sister Madonna by Wendy Leigh?
Madonna up close, by the brother who knows her better than anyone.

Christopher Ciccones extraordinary memoir is based on his forty-seven years of growing up with, working with, and understanding the most famous woman of our time, who has intrigued, scandalized, and entertained millions for half a century.

Through most of the iconic stars kaleidoscopic career, Christopher played an important role in her life: as her backup dancer, her personal assistant, her dresser, her decorator, her art director, her tour director.

If you think you know everything there is to know about Madonna, you are wrong. Only Christopher can tell the full scale, riveting untold story behind Madonnas carefully constructed mythology, and the real woman behind the glittering façade.

From their shared Michigan childhood, which Madonna transcended, then whisked Christopher to Manhattan with her in the early eighties, where he slepton her roach-infested floor and danced with her in clubs all over town — Christopher was with her every step of the way, experiencing her first hand in all her incarnations. The spoiled daddys girl, the punk drummer, the raunchy Boy Toy, Material Girl, Mrs. Sean Penn, Warren Beattys glamorous Hollywood paramour, loving mother, Mrs. Guy Ritchie, English grande dame — Christopher witnessed and understood all of them, as his own life was inexorably entwined with that of his chameleon sister.

He tangled with a cast of characters from artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, to Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss, Demi Moore, and, of course, Guy Ritchie, whose advent in Madonnas life splintered the loving relationship Christopher once had with her.

The mirror image of his legendary sister, with his acid Ciccone tongue, Christopher pulls no punches as he tells his astonishing story.

Life with My Sister Madonna is the juicy, cant-put-it-down story youve always wanted to hear, as told by Madonnas younger brother.

This book leads to disillusionment with fame, fortune, and Madonna.
Let me just say I am a Madonna fan, but lately she has done and said things that have truly disenchanted me. Hard Candy was very disappointing. Some of her actions and comments in the past year alone have turned me off even further. I couldn’t quite figure out why I was starting to feel this way about someone I adore. I ended up buying the audio version of this book to get a better idea of Madonna the person.

This book does not disappoint, in fact, it’s probably one of the best books ever written about Madonna. As some would like to believe, Christopher does not throw his sister under a bus, but does take her down a couple notches. He reveals how self-centered, egotistical, and controlling she can be. Christopher does not play the victim, but does let it be known that he gets sucked in by the fame and fortune.

Nevertheless, their relationship fell apart because she treated him like a servant, did not pay him what he was worth, and surrounded herself with sycophants, and she had Guy Ritchie who Ciccone made clear he disliked intensely. I think the reason why Madonna is beginning to crack, is because she has created a fantasy world, and everyone around her is afraid to tell her otherwise. She has separated herself from family; which in the end is never a good idea.

What is most disturbing about Madonna’s behavior, that Christopher reveals, is that nothing is sacred when it comes to advancing her career and image. She has notoriously used people. She staged the visitation to her mother’s grave during the Truth or Dare documentary. There is also strong insinuation that she half-heartedly adopted those children and is playing humanitarian to exploit and compete with Angelina Jolie. Nevertheless, with all her faults, she is still an admirable person who can be loving and caring, and does deserve all that she has earned. Christopher’s book is a very well rounded view on Madonna the person.

Great Insight
First I have to say that I’ve been a Madonna fan my entire life, and reading this book has certainly been an eye opener into her life, from a perspective we would never otherwise get.

I really relate to the book, mostly because I have the same kind of relationship with my sisters, and really, there’s just no convincing siblings of anything. They see you how they see you, and that’s the end.

The book though, really touches on a lot of issues that most people already know. Yes, Madonna is a [...], a huge [...]. I’ve known that forever. This book just pushes that notion further down the pike, both confirming and taking that, “[...] on a mission” persona to a whole nother level.

However, I still think Madonna is one of the best entertainers going and I don’t like Madonna because of her personality, I like her for what she does, and that’s entertain. Her creativity is nothing short of spectacular, and everytime she releases an album we see something different and unique.

It does sadden me the way she has treated her brother and others, and the way she’s totally turned her back on the gay community, which is about 95% of her fan base, yet we come back for more everytime.

Whatever your feelings, this book is a great read, and recommend it to any fan or non fan.

Why Buy A To Seduce A Sinner (The Legend of the Four Soldiers) by Elizabeth Hoyt?
Jasper Renshaw, Viscount Vale, has a problem: he needs to marry and produce an heir to the title. She has loved, and lost, before, and will do anything to keep him from learning her terrible weakness: shes secretly been in love with him for years. Hot and Amazing Romance
This is one of my hands down favorite romances. I adored Melissande and thought she was an amazing character; she has been in love with Jasper, Lord Vale, forever, but took so long to get up the courage to get up and go after what she wanted. This was especially wonderful once put in context with her lonely life where her only real friend is her dog. Those who complain about Melissande being too withdrawn need to keep in mind that the simple act of proposing to Jasper was the single most courageous thing she had ever done. This romance part of this book was about Jasper coming to terms with being so loved by such a great woman when he feels that he doesn’t deserve it because of his past during the French- Indian War. He is, surprise, a tortured hero who needs to be healed by the HOT loving that only our heroine can over. And offer it she does- this book is crazy hot.

This is one of the best written historicals I have ever read
This is an amazing love story. Ms. Hoyt developed the characters and even with flaws they are so lovable. This is one of those stories that you read and don’t want to put the book down. I highly rec this book!

Where To Buy Personal Injuries by Scott Turow At The Lowest Price?

Personal Injuries by Scott Turow

Why Buy A Personal Injuries by Scott Turow?
Scott Turow has always pushed himself beyond the expectations of readers and critics. In Presumed Innocent (1987), he introduced fictional Kindle County and ushered in the era that spawned such mega-authors as John Grisham, Richard North Patterson, and David Baldacci. In Personal Injuries, Turow continues to innovate on legal fiction, but his achievement this time is not gained through clever plot twists (though there are several) or intense legal action (though there is much of that too). The achievement of mastery this time is via exquisitely drawn, Faulknerian characters–attorney Robbie Feaver, agent Evon Miller, U.S. Attorney Stan Sennett, and Justice Brendan Tuohey–whose lives become the driving mystery at the core of the book.

The novel begins with Robbie Feaver seeking counsel from the narrator, attorney George Mason. For years, Feaver has been bribing several judges in the Common Law Claims Division to win favorable judgments. Now that U.S. Attorney Stan Sennett has uncovered Feavers dirty little secret, he wants to use Feaver to get at the man he believes to be at the center of all the legal corruption in the metropolitan area, Brendan Tuohey, Presiding Judge of Common Law Claims and heir apparent to the Chief Justice of Kindle County Superior Court. With Mason as an advisor, Robbie assists Sennett and his team of FBI undercover agents in crafting a massive sting operation that involves an FBI-manufactured lawyer named James McManis, a cast of fictional clients, and Evon Miller–a deep cover agent (and former Olympic athlete)–who poses as Robbies paralegal and paramour.

With a skill rarely found in genre fiction, Turow composes his narrative with variations on several recurring themes. The novel ripples with paranoia as the FBI enshrouds the legal community of Kindle County in a web of tapped phones, concealed cameras, and wired spies.

At the center of indirection sit Robbie and Evon. The pair dance through an elegant game of erotically-charged hide and seek: Robbie the practiced liar and former actor, and Evon, the agent whose whole life must remain a fiction if she is to survive. At their best, legal thrillers leave readers confronting the core of their values and perceptions of legal and moral rectitude. Personal Injuries is the legal thriller at its very best. –Patrick OKelley

These Injuries are very personal
Scott Turow has written one of the best in this genre, and I have read most of the Grisham stuff. Personal Injuries has two outstanding traits. First are the unforgettable characters, introduced in an off-hand way. The lawyers are neither good nor bad, just playing the hand they were dealt and trying to meet the expectations of their families. Second amazing thing here are the plot twists in the second half of the book. Feaver has a judge on the side who is not being bribed, Feaver’s mother had a past with the chief judge, a friend was in on the whole thing from the beginning. Unlike Grisham this thing is not preachy, there are fun characters like the ancient judges who can barely find their way to the bench.

Ken Howard, a.k.a The White Shadow, does an excellent job with the narration for the audio book. He can handle the voices and knows how to deliver a story.

I know Robbie Feaver. . . .
I know Robbie Feaver.

Maybe you do, too — if you’re lucky.

In my opinion, Robbie is among the most brilliantly — and lovingly — created characters in fiction.

Robbie is a lawyer, a nice Jewish boy, handsome, sexy, funny, and a complex human being.

“You could never count on him for honesty, assuming he even knew what it was. He was unruly and incorrigible. But if she stumbled, he’d come running. She couldn’t even say for sure she’d be able to reach out when he extended a hand. But he’d be there. she wasn’t going to forgive him, really. But she had to stop pretending with herself. Nine hundred people had just turned out, all there to buoy Robbie Feaver in his grief, nearly every one a friend who’d experienced his openness and the soothing warmth of his care. And she was one, too. You couldn’t fight facts.”

There have been at least two Robbie Feavers in my life, and as much as I love men, I loved these two most of all. It was an extraordinary delight to find such a beloved character in a novel.

Robbie shows us what love truly is — unconditional love, the kind of love you would be both blessed and unlikely to find in your lifetime. The man is deeply flawed: dishonest, irresponsible, undependable. Unfaithful, yet faithful: he strays, but always comes back to you.

In PERSONAL INJURIES, Mr. Turow tests Robbie Feaver (pronounce it “favor”) beyond all limits of physical and emotional endurance. Robbie’s wife has a fatal illness. She is slowly dying throughout the novel. The course of her illness is graphic and heartbreaking. The strength and courage of this woman and her husband are beyond the meaning of courage and strength.

In PERSONAL INJURIES, Mr. Turow explores love in all its forms: Robbie and his wife, Robbie and a lesbian woman, Robbie and his law partner and lifelong friend, Mort Dinnerstein.

“There is deep feeling between these men,” one of the lawyers says, though Robbie and Mort are not homosexual.

In PERSONAL INJURIES, love transcends sex.

Scott Turow is a brilliant writer. He unfailingly delivers a great story, a roller coaster ride, and a page-turning cliffhanger. Sometimes the writing bogs down just a little bit. Forget and forgive that. The book is superb.

And don’t pigeonhole this author as a “genre writer” of law thrillers. He is far, far better than that and getting better all the time. PRESUMED INNOCENT is a great read, and in the opinion of many reviewers, his best book. But I think his skill with characterization — making his characters real and complex and exciting for us — is, in PERSONAL INJURIES, superior to his other works.

Nothing Short Of Tremendous
Scott Turow is a magnificent writer, one of the great living American writers now that George V. Higgins is no longer in our midst.I won’t say too much about it except to heartily recommend it to any serious reader who seeks eloquence and brilliance in the stories they read. There could be some readers who find this book tedious (those who seek a brisker pace like the works of John Grisham).
This book is brilliantly detailed and has endless substance.
Read it, you won’t be disappointed. Those who haven’t read his prior works will be introduced to a literary icon !! Jay Wickramasinghe, Citrus Heights, California

Nights In Rodanthe By Nicholas Sparks

Nights In Rodanthe By Nicholas Sparks

From Publishers Weekly
Sparks (A Bend in the Road, etc.) logs more miles on the winding high road of romance with the story of two middle-aged people who meet by chance in the small North Carolina coastal town of Rodanthe. The impassioned but doomed romance seems to owe much to Robert James Wallers The Bridges of Madison County. Once again, a housewife who has focused on everyone but herself indulges in a brief, intense, secret affair with a stranger who changes her life forever. As the story begins, Adrienne Willis is 60, the divorced mother of three grown children. To help her troubled daughter cope with the untimely recent death of her husband, Adrienne tells her the tale of her love affair, which took place 15 years before. At the time, Adrienne was an uptight matron whose ex-husband had just left her for a younger woman. This rejection colors her entire life, and Sparks realistically portrays a vulnerable and isolated woman who throws herself into raising her children to escape her despair. Paul Flanner, her paramour, is a surgeon and an obsessive workaholic with no genuine connection to his wife or son, whose world completely falls apart when one of his patients inexplicably dies. Sparks builds a taut, plausible relationship between his protagonists, but even fans may be irked by the obviousness of their story and the inevitability of their fate.

From
Sparks, popular author of several romantically themed best-sellers, including Message in a Bottle (1998), is back at it with his latest mix of love story and pathos. He doesnt disappoint, whipping up plenty of melodrama in the story of two shattered people, both badly scarred by past experiences, who find each other late in life and realize they are soul mates. Adrienne Willis is a 45-year-old mother of three whose husband recently abandoned her for a younger woman. When she visits the small coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina, seeking a bit of respite from her problems, she meets Paul Flanner, a 54-year-old doctor who has sold his thriving medical practice and come to Rodanthe to escape his own tortured past. Despite their short courtship, the two find themselves falling madly and passionately in love and vow to spend their lives together. Unfortunately, Paul needs to make amends with the son he has long neglected and so embarks on an ill-fated trip, which leads to heartbreak. Sparks has a very solid fan base, and they will be clamoring for his latest. Kathleen Hughes

Customer Reviews & Opinions

divorcé must buy!
If you are divorced with children or even without, this book is for you. The main character, Adrienne Willis, goes through so many emotions and shares her feelings that divorced women can relate too. She talks about the initial schock of knowing that her marriage was over, and like any person, looks back to see what went wrong, and when they first realized it, but chose to ignore it. She then reveals that she cried all of the time in the first few months of seperaton. She was afraid for herself because she thought she would be alone after her children left and she was afraid for her children because they were going through the difficult years of being teenagers. Any woman can probably relate to her and would love to hear her words of wisdom and her story of how she met Paul Flanner. You will fall in love with this book and with the characters themselves. This will give you hope that life goes on, there is someone else out there for you, but most importantly you will one day be okay and make peace with the situation of being divorced. Nicholas Sparks has out done himself again! Don’t waste another minute. Buy this book now, so you too can fall in love with the romance of Adrienne and Paul during their “Nights in Rodanthe.”

Flo’s Books-Nick S.
This was my first reading of Sparks’ books (I missed the movie versions of Letter in a Bottle and The Noteook). It made me a real Sparks’ fan. I found it incredible that a man could so realistically express some of the emotions that women experience. I had to look at the author’s name a few times as I was reading to assure myself that this was not a woman righting under a psuedonym. I now understand why Sparks’ books have been made into moview.

I loved the story. A good plot. It was hard to turn it off.
