great for reading to kids; adults, suspend your disbelief
I read this to my nine year old son and he soon got quite caught up in the story. Susan Cooper’s mix of adventure, Arthurian legend, mystery, and the eternal struggle between good and evil (nicely consistent with our Christian beliefs) worked very well, as we eagerly anticipate the next books in the series. My son has read through all the Harry Potter books on this own, and he loved hearing this tale.

Parents, there are quite contrived plot devices and implausibilities that strain credulity. There’s not only a deus ex machina, there is literally a canus ex machina–a plot twist involving a dog. Also, the final rescue scene is hardly plausible, but that hardly matters because of the action. Finally, the problem with the moon’s position in finding the grail applies to the sun as well. Ignore all that and enjoy the good story with your children. Highly recommended.

DON JOHNSON DELIVERS
Don Johnson plays a dangerous sociopath who enjoys planning the execution of the women he uses while they think they are using him. He lures a beautiful well connected attorney into defending him against a murder charge by creating evidence that links her to the crime.
So here’s the review: Johnson delivers a stunning portrayal of a man who is barely sane but perfectly effective in his manipulations of people, specifically women. Every scene in which he reveals his character is riveting in its complexity. Without Johnson this is an entertaining movie with a competent cast. But Johnson’s perfomance is a master class in acting. Stage Fright starring Alfie Bass Ballard Berkeley Cyril Chamberlain Marlene Dietrich Helen Goss

Why Buy A Stage Fright starring Alfie Bass Ballard Berkeley Cyril Chamberlain Marlene Dietrich Helen Goss?
In suspense films characters frequently deceive one another. But can the camera tell a lie? This is one of the questions that Hitchcock takes up in Stage Fright (1950), and his answer has puzzled, infuriated, and delighted audiences ever since its initial release. Stage Fright is one of only two films Hitchcock made in Great Britain after he moved to America in 1940 (the other is Frenzy, his late masterpiece). It is also his only picture to star Marlene Dietrich, whose characters allegiances are even more ambiguous than usual.

Years after making Stage Fright, Hitchcock claimed that because the villains were just as frightened as the heroes, the film did not carry the requisite quota of menace. But it has received a good deal of attention in recent years and is worth a fresh look. The director did admit that he was proud of the movies most astounding plot twist, though no commercial filmmaker since has been bold enough to let the camera lie so eloquently. –Raphael Shargel

Hitchcock is a Mastermind of Cinema and Stage Fright is another shinning example
“Stage Fright” must be one of the most criminally underrated works of the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock; some critics even put it in the same league as the weakest of Hitchcock’s works, “Topaz”. The master himself badmouthed it and considered one of his greatest “failures” due to the confusion the plot seemed to generate in its release. The fact that it was followed by the tremendous “Strangers on a Train” made things harder for this little overlooked gem.

Despite this apparent bad luck, “Stage Fright” is a movie that displays the master’s fine eye for film-making, and it even foresees the bright future Hitchcock had ahead at the beginning of the 50s. It’s safe to say that this movie, along with “Saboteur”, are the roots of the most celebrated works by the Master. Works like “North By Northwest”, “Vertigo” or “Psycho” have an immediate precursor in these two often forgotten films.

Innocence Lost
I love this film and have seen it many times for several reasons. Eve Gill is quite a character. Although she is a would be actress, and perhaps not a good one on the stage, she acts her way through in this story deceiving the naive detective and the mundane Charlotte Inwood. As the original Eve, she decieves and draws the detective to the truth behind the crime. In this sense, she is not different from Charlotte Inwood since she also decieves, but for selfish purposes. The Garden Party is another allusion to the original sin in this story. It is in the Garden Party where the detective’s eyes are opened and where the serpent (Charlotte Inwood) is revealed. The use of the tainted doll carried by a little boy was quite interesting because they are images of innocence combined with tainted innocence. Notice that the blood stain is on the doll’s skirt, a way of emphasizing the loss of innocence. At the end, Eve discovers that she has been decieved all along, waking up from her own innocence.
I also love this film for its soundtrack. The music that is used is simply effective in creating tension. One of my favorite scenes is precisely when Eve is supplanting the maid for the first time and the detective shows up. Each scene is carefully dome with music and other effects that makes this film quite entertaining.

Another Alfred Hitchcock Classic that is a must own for your collection
In suspense films, characters frequently deceive one another. But can the camera tell a lie? This is one of the questions that Hitchcock takes up in Stage Fright (1950), and his answer has puzzled, infuriated, and delighted audiences ever since its initial release.

The attractive Jane Wyman as Eve is outstanding in the lead role, while Marlene Dietrich steals much of the limelight, notably when she performs the song “The Laziest Girl in Town.” Alistair Sim is simply charismatic as Eves’ father. Charlotte suffers from ‘Stage Fright’ in front of an audience and is a fascinating character who uses her acting skills to get herself out of tricky situations in real life.

The film pulls back to Hitchcocks’ origins as it contains many quintessentially British characters, notably Eves’ parents and Charlottes’ maid, and it is set in London which is where many of his early British films from the 1920′s and 1930′s took place. A must own for your Hitchcock Collection.

Suspense in an exotic setting
Ginger Carpenter was forced into retirement from the mission field, and she still resents it. However, she’s determined not to let her hurt feelings interfere with her brother’s wedding. Graham and Willow Traynor, his intended bride, have survied a dangerous attack which almost cost them their lives. Now they are flying their wedding party to Hawaii for the ceremony. Everything is going well until they board the plane and Ginger discovers that Ray Clyde, the man responsible for her retirement, is Graham’s best man. Then Rick Fenrow, the man who almost killed Willow escapes from prison, and even in Hawaii, they are not safe from his plans for revenge.
Lots of character conflict, an exotic setting, plenty of romance, and great suspense. As usual, Hannah Alexander delivers an exciting, tightly woven story.

Good read with surprise plot twist
Death Benefits was just as good as the rest of the Hideaway series. Even though much of the story takes place in Hawaii and not Hideaway, there are still lots of tie ins to the town. I especially liked the surprise plot twist toward the end of the book.

storyteller
I love true mysteries, not sensational thrillers full of gore. This is an old time mystery. The other reviewers described the story line so I’ll tell what I liked about the writing. It’s written in short chapters: 128 in 330 pages. Each one grabs your attention and holds it as you eagerly read the next and the next. It’s hard to put down. Sociopaths are definitely intriguing and scary. Mary Jane Clark shines a light on one of these individuals, with a plot twist of course. A step-mother and step-daughter rocky relationship, a beautiful accomplished actress, a talented painter, and a drug dealing grounds keeper all add to the intrigue of the story. I’ll definitely be reading more from Mary Jane Clark.
