great cookbook.
It is a great book for Indian cooking in general but great for vegetarian recipes. It would be a first choice.

What a fantastic book — I’m finally able to master the cuisine I could formerly only dine on in restaurants, and this way I can control things like spiciness and amount of oil.

With the exception of some of the desserts (I don’t know what milk fudge is or how I can whip up a vegan equivalent), I have not come across a single recipe that I was not able to make vegan. I was even able to enjoy saag paneer for the first time by using tofu in lieu of cheese. Ghee, milk, and cream can be replaced with vegetable oil or soy/rice milk.

Almost every recipe I’ve tried has been a winner. There are several that I’ve made again and again, such as the saag paneer, roti, the black-lentil dal, the Tanjore three-bean salad, and the five-jewel creamed lentils. As a consequence the binding is starting to fall apart — another reviewer mentioned poor-quality binding and that has been my experience as well.

One warning: If you don’t have an Indian market in your town, the ingredients for many of these recipes might be difficult to track down.

I’m Not a Vegetarian
I can imagine becoming a vegetarian for reasons of social conscience, but it hasn’t happened yet. I do, however, have vegetarian friends who tolerate my lack of enlightenment, and I do sometimes cook for them. On such occasions, if I feel like challenging myself, this is the cookbook to which I turn for inspiration.

Julie Sahni offers clear enough descriptions of the tasks involved in classic Indian cooking so that anyone who’s a halfway good cook in any other style can easily produce something delicious from her recipes. I never follow recipes exactly except when I use this book; I’ve learned from trial and error that whatever Julie says is right. The lessons she offers in nutrition – balancing grains with lentils and other pulses; using spices to AID digestion; conserving nutrients in the cooking process – are invariably worth learning.

The cookbook begins with eighty pages of descriptions of the basic ingredients of Indian vegetarian cooking, especially the spices and spice blends. Julie tells us which spices can be ground or purchased ground in advance without sacrificing flavor, and which cannot. Lots of recipes in the newspapers, for instance, call for “garam masala” as if there were only one blend of spices under that name. Julie offers five quite different blends of aromatic and piquant spices, all regional garam masalas, and tells us when each is appropriate.

Some of the best recipes in the book are for pilafs and hearty stews. Then there are clear instrutions for making two dozen sorts of Indian breads and dumplings. Home-made chutneys, I can tell you, are way tastier than gunk from jars. Cauliflower stuffed with nuts and greens is one of my favorite showy dishes for company. How about ‘tiny new potatoes smothered in fenugreek leaves?’ She includes instructions for growing a pot of fenugreek from seeds. Cardamom ice cream and rose petal rice pudding are always show-stopper desserts. There are also ideas for whole menus – combinations of dishes both for aesthetic and nutritioal balance.

I have half a dozen Indian cookbooks – gifts from friends mostly – but Julie Sahni’s is the only one that’s speckled with food stains and oil smudges. Honorable decorations for a cookbook, indicating frequent use.

Maximum Ride The Final Warning
Okay, so, I am a kid an adults and teens probably won’t think much of my opinion, but I still have to get it out there. This was an amazing book! So many people are saying that it was horrible, when it was not. Global Warming is an international crisis and I think that everybody needs to be aware of it. James Patterson did a superb job of doing that. Many people did not enjoy this book because it was about Global Warming. Well, as I have said, Global Warming is a big deal, and many people don’t care about it, when, in fact, it’s the reason that more an more people are dying each year. Now, since this is a book review, I need to talk about The Final Warning. Look at the concept people! Look at the writing! It’s an amazing book! There was word choice, there was humor, and, (of course) there was romance. Now, I know that I won’t be able to change your opinion much, but, please, think about my review. Erin Gruwell is an amazing person. She was able to reach her tough students and make connections with them that “the system” had written off. Much as people would like to deny it, there is racism in our schools. If given a chance, I think that all kids can succeed. It’s the stereotypes and told that you’re stupid that brings a lot of these kids down. Poverty and their domestic situations don’t help in the least either. Erin saw through everything and at such a young age! I believe it’s people like her that truly change the world for the better.

A remarkable woman listens to the reality in her students and finds ways to reach the real person in each of them. Her affluent background and connections allows her to make the most of unique connections. The experiences of the Freedom Writers is inspiring and a clear statement that difficult students can have a richness to be realized. There is that of God in everyone and she sought it out.

Many others have written detailed reviews. This is merely an attempt to throw mine in the ring. I will begin by saying that I do not believe this book was ever intended to be a “How To” manual, but rather it is Erin telling us her story. One reviewer’s title stated it was “Difficult to Replicate.” I would take that one further and state that it is IMPOSSIBLE to replicate (it is HER story!) and we would miss the point if we tried.

Her ability to take these kids to screenings, and meet screenwriters, and dine at the Marriott, and meet Miep Gies, and attend the Holocaust Museum was due in part to their geographical location. Granted, all of these resources were available to other teachers in the area — but my understanding is that no one was taking “those kids.” So her willingness to take these students to these places was a large part of what changed their lives. However, depending on where you live, some of these things just are not an option!

The bigger lesson is not to replicate (we would all try & fail!) — but rather to figure out what is it that I can do, where I am, with the resources I have in front of me. Otherwise, we could excuse our inaction for lack of resources. For me this book served as a means of self-evaluation — and I came away deciding that someone raised the bar, and it’s time to step-up.

ER Lessons for Leadership and Lessons for the World Now
After reading about Colin Powel’s style, Bush’s War and Guiliani’s book on Leadership, it was a nice break to read about one of history’s greatest first ladies–Eleanor Roosevelt. It also served as a checkpoint for myself to have a peek at the early 20th century and the beginnings of the UN in light of recent events. This book was written by Robin Gerber who is a senior scholar at the Academy of Leadership which is part of the University of Maryland. Not only a biography of Eleanor, it’s also a how-to on leadership and includes side information about how other women implement Eleanor’s style in their lives today.

Give Voice to Your Leadership–ER did not start out a brilliant and inspiring public speaker, she had to practice at it. She eventually managed to be an effective communicator through both speech and her writing in columns. She held press conferences at the White House for women reporters only–she identified an audience she could reach and began speaking to them.

Her discussion on the special leadership skills developed through motherhood make clear the public interest in cultivating women leaders. The book is both a very accesible, good read and an effective step-by-step leadership guide.

The only nonfiction book I’ve completed voluntarily
This is the only nonfiction book I’ve ever read and completed voluntarily. In fact it is the only “self-help” book…which I think it fits in that category…that I have read past the first chapter. It is extremely compellingly written. I don’t know whether it’s the subject matter, or Dr. Gerber’s style, but I started the book on an airplane, and was unable to put it down. It is for sure the only nonfiction book I have ever read that made me cry. Dr. Gerber makes points about leadership..what makes good leaders, the special role that women have in nuturing families, and how that is completely unrecognized in our society as having any value in preparring women for professional positions…how the simple concept of having passion for the cause you are leading is essential for effective leadership…..she makes these points in a deceptively casual conversational manner where you don’t feel like she’s teaching you, but in the end you realize you have learned a great deal…about life, about leading, and about yourself. Where I cried was where she said you have to be authentic in what you are leading…..meaning (I think) that you have to BELIEVE in it, which is different from having passion. Such a simple concept, but so true. How many leaders do you see, that truly believe in what they are doing? vs how many chairmen of departments do you see that appear to be there for the accrutriments?
This book literally changed my life. sounds ridiculous, but it did. Made me do a LOT of soulsearching.
I urge anyone, male or female, wondering whether you are leading as effectively as you can, or wondering whether you should be taking on a leadership position, to read this.

Best read in a long time!
Well written, with really interesting vignettes of Eleanor’s life. I found this to be one of the most (personally) motivational books I’ve read in a long time. It’s a story of overcoming the odds, and bucking the social norms of her day, to voice her passion for particular social issues. I also appreciated the tie-in to current leadership theory and thinking…with great examples of her approach to people and problems.

The unabashedly goo-goo-eyed ballad Fresh Feeling launches with a swell of strings, just to underscore how dreamy our protagonist feels, and the spastic instrumental twitches on Thats Not Really Funny counter the songs title, while doubling as one of the few elements able to snap Es voice out of its vaguely narcoleptic drone. Great Listen
Maybe a product of past critical success and some great albums, but reading reviews here, seems E is suffering from some very exacting expectations. By any standards this is a great album. Forget the lyrics (which are nothing if not unique, interesting), there are some really great melodies here. “Fresh Feeling” is the stand-out track.

Crazy sweet.
Souljacker is a great addition to anyone’s CD collection. The CD starts out with an interesting sound that seems as though it’s gonna be a hard-rockin cd. Dog faced boy has some catchy guitar rifs, but the Eels really flex their odd flavor in the more mellow songs such as woman driving, man sleeping, which has an excellent acoustic soud. The best song on the album by far though is Bus Stop Boxer. The lyrics are just amazingly writen and composed. Highly recomend this cd to anyone who’s looking for something great that is different from any other cd’s.

A gem
I wanted more information on Narnia/Prince Caspian and I found it in this book. The book has individual sections dedicated the actors who played the characters, which I love. And even better, it has “the inside story” about the making of Prince Caspian. There are many big glossy pictures and they are fantastic. I can pick it up at my leisure and reread this again and again.

Harry Greggson-Williams has done it again!!
This soundtrack is so amazing! Harry Greggson-Williams has the remarkable ability to write music that reminds you of just what was happening at each part of the film: Caspian’s escape from the castle, the children discovering their old treasure room, the incredible castle raid, and so much more. This soundtrack has it all: the music is adventurous, dreamy, wistful, powerful, awesome, inspiring! I always considered the first soundtrack to be spectacular and this one is no different. I would recommend this soundtrack to all Narnia lovers out there. Even if you weren’t all that wild about the film, the music still has the ability to transport you to another place. Allow yourself to be swept away into the world of Narnia! You won’t regret it .
