The Amazing Dr Clitterhouse VHS starring Edward G Robinson Humphrey Bogart Claire Trevor Allen Jenkins Donald Crisp

Why Buy A The Amazing Dr Clitterhouse VHS starring Edward G Robinson Humphrey Bogart Claire Trevor Allen Jenkins Donald Crisp?
A stylish, often amusing crime drama, this 1938 feature revolves around a central, improbable plot twist that consciously serves its casting against type: as the eponymous doctor, Edward G. Robinson, who had helped define the Warner Bros. style for gritty gangster sagas, jettisons his signature snarl in favor of a plummy, vaguely English accent that underlines his urbane sophistication. Dr. Clitterhouse is a creature of privilege who embarks on a criminal life not out of desperation, but rather through intellectual curiosity; instead of slouch hats and suits, he has marcelled hair and first appears in white tie and tails. He begins pulling off perfect jewel thefts as research into the criminal mind, but his gradual immersion in New Yorks shadowy demimonde of thieves and fences eventually finds the good doctor between those two worlds.

Robinsons principal foils stick closer to their studio strong suits. Humphrey Bogart is Rocks Valentine, a sturdy if familiar variation on the hoods and have-nots that were his early stock in trade at the studio. Bogarts fence and former paramour is Jo Keller, played by Claire Trevor as glamorous, streetwise, and otherwise decent, apart from her knack for larceny. When the doctor asks her to fence his glittering contraband, shes intrigued, and Clitterhouse, known to the hoods only as the Professor, becomes their strategist. Jo is clearly falling for him, while Rocks is visibly jealous of the fastidious strangers rising influence and romantic rivalry.

In keeping with its ultimately goofy premise, the story navigates some eccentric plot turns with an aplomb that can be credited to the solid cast (including other studio stalwarts such as Allen Jenkins, Ward Bond, and Donald Crisp) and the three principals, who would work off each other to much more riveting effect a decade later in Key Largo. –Sam Sutherland

Great Start to a Very Good Series
This was a great start to a very good series, introducing the heroine, Kris Longknife, scion of a highly wealthy and influencial family, who chucks the life style to join the space Navy, only to have that life style rise up and bite her continually.

Some will compare this to Honor Harrington, although the two series are quite different in tone and focus. I enjoyed the Honor series (at least until the end, when they became a bit repititious and also too military tactic heavy for my taste), and this new series has more of an emphasis on character development.

Plenty of action, interesting concepts, all part of the old fashioned space opera sagas. But this one does not require a list kept to the side to remember scores of characters, and the descriptions are sufficient to give one an understanding of context, but not so detailed as to encourage one to skip the paragraphs for more action-oriented material.

This started the series. While the series itslef is a bit uneven, it does have flashes of excellence (along with the unfortunate minor errors in text that good editing would have caught). And while it’s not necessary to read them all to understand any one standing by itself, there is a sense of character development which is enhanced by reading them in order. Plots shifts are explained, but it’s fun to watch the development of some of the characaters (expecially her pet computer) over time.

Not great literature, but a highly pleasant diversion.

Kristin Lavransdatter II The Wife Penguin Classics by Sigrid Undset – Save 32% Today!

Kristin Lavransdatter II The Wife Penguin Classics by Sigrid Undset

Why Buy A Kristin Lavransdatter II The Wife Penguin Classics by Sigrid Undset?
In Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-1922), Sigrid Undset interweaves political, social, and religious history with the daily aspects of family life to create a colorful, richly detailed tapestry of Norway during the fourteenth-century. The trilogy, however, is more than a journey into the past. Undsets own life—her familiarity with Norse sagas and folklore and with a wide range of medieval literature, her experiences as a daughter, wife, and mother, and her deep religious faith—profoundly influenced her writing. Her grasp of the connections between past and present and of human nature itself, combined with the extraordinary quality of her writing, sets her works far above the genre of historical novels. This new translation by Tina Nunnally—the first English version since Charles Archers translation in the 1920s—captures Undsets strengths as a stylist. Nunnally, an award-winning translator, retains the natural dialog and lyrical flow of the original Norwegian, with its echoes of Old Norse legends, while deftly avoiding the stilted language and false archaisms of Archers translation. In addition, she restores key passages left out of that edition.

Undsets ability to present a meticulously accurate historical portrait without sacrificing the poetry and narrative drive of masterful storytelling was particularly significant in her homeland. Granted independence in 1905 after five hundred years of foreign domination, Norway was eager to reclaim its national history and culture. Kristin Lavransdatter became a touchstone for Undsets contemporaries, and continues to be widely read by Norwegians today. In the more than 75 years since it was first published, it has also become a favorite throughout the world.

Kristin Lavransdatter II, The Bride
Sigrid Undset was the first woman to win the Nobel prize for literature. Since Kristin Lavransdatter was first published in America in the 1920s, succeeding generations have read it and found Kristin and Erland’s story resonated in their hearts in a way that few books do. Undset has the rare gift of understanding the inner feelings of men as well as women.

Those who have struggled with the artificially archaic language of Charles Archer’s translation will welcome this new version by Tiina Nunnally. She has also restored some parts that Archer eliminated, perhaps because he found them too sexually explicit for readers of English in the 1920s.

But, by all means start with the first volume, which, with volume III, is also available in the Nunnally translation.

What a great read!
This book is simply wonderful! I cannot wait until the third volume of this excellent translation is released. Kristen’s life, though lived on a different continent, in a very different culture and society, so many ages ago, rings so true to contemporary life. The trials and joys that she experiences make this book a wonderful read. And what a romance it is, too! If your looking for a good story by a good storyteller, pick this up–start with the first book, though!

After the Romance
Most romance novels present us with the trials and tribulations of star-crossed lovers, who in the end marry and live happily ever after. The first volume of Sigrid Undset’s fine trilogy, THE WREATH, took us through the romance between Kristin Lavransdatter and Erland, concluding in their wedding. Unlike most romance novels, however, that novel foreshadowed the difficulties that the protagonists were likely to encounter in marriage. THE WIFE is the story of that marriage, with all of its strengths and weaknesses.

Once again, Undset succeeds in depicting a wide range of real people, in all their human glory. Kristin begins the novel with a pilgrimage in penance for her sin (she was already pregnant on her wedding day), and while she finds forgiveness, she struggles through the rest of the novel to learn how to forgive her husband. Erland begins the novel as an irresponsible man who seems lucky to have someone like Kristin. By the end of the novel, we see him rising above anything that could have been expected of him as he faces torture and imprisonment with dignity. There are no good guys and bad guys here, just human beings doing their best, yet struggling with their own passions and limitations. Undset’s insight into the human condition is remarkable. And while Kristin and Erland do not achieve the illusory, romantic happiness that is celebrated in most romance novels, they find themselves with something much richer: a marriage in which a husband and a wife have learned to love each other in full knowledge of their mutual failings.

Undset was a great student of human nature, and she particularly understood our failings and our need to find redemption. By the end of the novel, Kristin has learned much in life, but her journey is not yet over. And so we move on to the final volume, THE CROSS.

Kristin Lavransdatter II: The Wife (Penguin Classics)
A great book for those who love to read good literature.

The Heart of the Medieval Mind
Sigrid Undset perfectly captures one of the essential personal conflicts of the Middle Ages: the strictures of the Church and a patriarchal society on love and marriage. Having followed her heart and her feelings of love, Kristin is unfortunately therefore placed at odds with her family and the Church. Her search for reconciliation (or at least some accomodation) is fascinating, a marvelous spiritual journey. The typical medieval mind often had the terror of hellfire hanging over it, and we see this in the early part of this novel, as Kristin, full of guilt, makes a pilgrimage with her newborn son to find redemption. The politics of feudalism eventually intrude and complicate her life, as her husband becomes more involved in court intrigues. This translation is most excellent: it beats the silly pseudo-Old English one from the 1920′s. I hope Tiina Nunnally will eventually translate all of Undset’s works!

Morrowind Master
I don’t mean to insult the other reviewers, as they seem to be experienced gamers, but I think I have the most experience with this game, and my review will be the most accurate. Let me start by saying I came across this game in 2004 (actually it might have been early 2005) when my friend bought it for $20 used, for the Xbox. (If you have an Xbox and a capable PC I reccomend this game for the PC, as the load times for the Xbox are very long, sometimes over a minute.) I played for a while and eventually bought the game for myself. I played nothing else (heck, I did nothing else) for the next 6 months. I’m talking 2 hours daily. And I still haven’t beaten everything (mind you, I bought this game with the Tribunal expansion and the Bloodmoon expansion).
Not everyone will fall in love with this game the way I did. Morrowind is designed for hardcore gamers (and I mean HARDCORE) and if you do not consider yourself one, you will be overwhelmed with this game. For those who like video games but aren’t willing to devote that much time to one game, I recomend the more “user-friendly” sequel, Oblivion. But if you are like me and consider video games your main or one of your main interests, this game should amaze you. Obviously not everything will be perfect and problem free, but keep in mind that this is an old game.

Some of the cons:
-Load times can be long (but only if you have a slow computer or an Xbox).
-The journal is untidy to say the least, it is difficult to see which quests you have and haven’t finished.
-It is very hard, because if you are exploring and happen to stumble upon enemies that you aren’t supposed to face until laterin the game you will get killed. No doubt. (I don’t really consider this a con but it bothers my friends.)
-The beginning of the game is confusing and you will probably have to start over several times until you are satisfied with your character.
-The game’s world is teeming with enemy creatures, most of which aren’t dangerous but all of which are extremely annoying.
-It can take a good 20 minutes to travel from one place to another on foot.

I’m not going to bother to list all the pros because there are so many, but they include:
-An incredibly huge world, but not like the “huge world” of games like GTA or Spiderman. You can actually enter all of the buildings in cities and talk to all the people, most of whom are important in some quest and all of whom are unique.
-Incedible character customization which allows the game to be played from many different perspectives (I have a wizard charcter, an assassin character and a knight character).
-A rich plot and “history of the world”. You can spend hours learning about the political systems, religions and histories that were create for this game.

There are so many more but it is late and this reviews is already way too long.

Overall I would recommend this game to anyone who loves video games (RPGs espescially) and has lots of time on their hands :) .

I bought this disk as a backup
Morrowind in my estimation is the best RPG ever. I have enjoyed playing it for years and bought this disk simply because I saw my old disk was getting worn and I was afraid that it might become unplayable. I want to be able to play this game for many more years to come. Oblivion was good too, but Morrowind is still my favorite.
