Why Buy A A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?
A Study in Scarlet is the first published story of one of the most famous literary detectives of all time, Sherlock Holmes. Here Dr. Watson, who has just returned from a war in Afghanistan, meets Sherlock Holmes for the first time when they become flat-mates at the famous 221 B Baker Street. In A Study in Scarlet Sherlock Holmes investigates a murder at Lauriston Gardens as Dr. Watson tags along with Holmes while narratively detailing his amazing deductive abilities.

The sentences I like
This book has been valued for many years, thus my review in not in need.

However, I do like several sentences in this book, which throw the light into how to work, how the life is. Here they are.

“No data yet,” he answered. “It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence. It biases the judgment.”

“They say that genius is an infinite capacity for taking pains,” he remarked with a smile.

“What you do in this world is a matter of no consequence,” returned my companion, bitterly. “The question is, what can you make people believe that you have done.”

Sherlock Holmes Begins
Study in Scarlet / 1-420-92553-9

The world’s first introduction to Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet encompasses the detective’s first adventure in a whole book, rather than in the later short story format that Doyle favored. The first half of the book follows Holmes’ normal case-solving routine, with the second half explaining the background and motive of the captured criminal – an unusual detail since, in later stories, the motive was usually summed up in a few brief sentences and it is left to the reader to decide whether to sympathize with the captured villain.

The book and the mystery is quite gripping and fascinating, like all Holmes stories, but the reader should be warned that certain members of the early Church of Latter Day Saints (or Mormons) are shown in an extremely unfavorable light. Without giving away the plot, several leading members of the community in the story are murderers and rapists, and this view may cause some readers discomfort. I, personally, feel that Doyle’s works should not be taken literally with regards to historical accuracy, particularly American historical accuracy. In fact, in one story (the Five Orange Pips, I believe), Holmes isn’t sure which American state is known as ‘the Lone Star state’ – Watson has to point out that the state in question is Texas, which Holmes shrugs off as a point not worth remembering. This cavalier attitude of Doyle towards American history confirms in my opinion that Doyle was less interested in making Mormons look bad, and more interested in not letting any facts get in the way of a good story.

In summary, if you love Holmes and bad historicity won’t bother you, check out A Study in Scarlet, just remember that it’s fiction, not fact.

English Language Learners
This book is an excellent classroom resource for young school-age English Language Learners (ELLs). Once it has been read a few times, the ELLs can apply the question using new and personal information. The neat thing about using this book with beginner ELLs is that they are able to quickly begin using it on their own for practice. I have bought all the books in the series to teach beginner ELLs.

My daughter’s favorite!
Very colorful and interactive book. My 11 mos. old daughter’s favorite book-we have to read it last every night before bed.

A great farm book to share with your little one
My 2 year old daughter loved this book from the moment she got it. She loves farm animals and there are lots of sturdy flaps for her to explore her. Each page gives you three lift the flap clues to a farm animals identy and then on the opposite page you can lift a large flap to reveal the animal in question. I like this book because it teaches more than just the animals name. It gets your little one thinking about such questions as where the animal lives and what it eats. The illustrations look like charming paintings. This is a book both my daughter and I can love.

Best ending I have ever read
“I rewrote the ending to Farewell to Arms, the last page of it, thirty-nine times before I was satisfied” – Ernest Hemingway

I have read this book twice now, across the period of about 15 months. The first time I read it and finished the last page, I closed the book slowly and just sat there in silence for about ten seconds. The only thing I could think of was – “that was the best ending of any book I have ever read, in my entire life.”

I put off writing a review, because I really just don’t know what to say about it, and I wanted to read it twice first. I had the same feelings the second time. I’ve read three or four Hemingway books now, and I’m getting very accustomed to his writing style, and I love it. The emotions and characters come off the page with simple unobstructed prose. His words simply don’t distract you with intricate words or complicated sentences. The work and effort it must take in order to make his writing so clear.. is just beyond me.

This book, to me, seemed to just tell a plain old story, nothing all that exciting. There are memorable scenes during the course for sure… but the ending will just blow you away. If you start this book, you need to finish it. I don’t expect that I will ever come across another ending which is as well written as this one. I simply could not believe the last couple of pages and how emotional and stunning they were.

I also read this particular printing. I got it for $2 outside the Salvation Army in Cambridge during a book sale. The book itself was in very good condition. The pages are thick, the binding is decent, and the hardcover is nice. Older books have a different quality about them compared to modern printings, and I like the older books better. The feel of the book, the smell of the pages…. if you are to buy a copy of this book, opposed to a library checkout, this printing is a nice one to have. I’d prefer this printing over a modern paperback any day of the week.

There was an old lady who swallowed a shell….
I bought this book for my preschool children (ages 3-4 yrs) and they loved it. This one has a more positive look on it where as the fly book was all about death and this one is all about the beach and living in California on the beach the children could really relate to it.

The only down side (If you were to even call it a downside) is that there isn’t as much stuff going on in this version. The fly book (newer version at least) gave the reader a great oppertunity to be silly and act out all the different voices “He missed out on the sauce…Even the artist is crying…I think i’ll have a ham on rye…Ect.” This one there is great, wonderful illistrations but only 1-2 sentences per page.

Very satisfied with my purchase they children ask for it, and love it!

ONE OF MY FAVORITES. HARD NOT TO LIKE THIS ONE.
The rhyming text and the wonderfull illustrations in this particular work are absolutely captivating. There was an old lady who swallowed a shell, also an assortment of other items such as a crab, fish, gull, and on and on. The rhyme is a chain rhyme which can go one and on. It is actually fun, while reading this one to a class of kids, or a one on one read, to have the children or child, actually make up other rhyming lines to go along with the story. I have been able to captivate a class for a good 45 or more minutes using this book as a prompt. As stated, the illustrations are quite appealing and both they and the text are quirky enough that most adults enjoy the read along with the child. I do recommend this one quite highly.
