Can friendships survive gossip?
Holly Keller’s HELP: A STORY OF FRIENDSHIP tells of Mouse and his very different friends who get along well – until Mouse hears from a mutual friend that his snake friend may be dangerous. Can friendships survive gossip? When Mouse is indeed endangered, danger – and rescue – come from unexpected places in this gentle story.

Books for early readers
One five year old twin granddaughter had selected Help!: A Story of Friendship to give to her school library on her birthday. But on that morning she changed her mind and decided to give the school a different choice. It’s a cute story with a wonderful message that rings truer to me than ones from Dora or Hannah Montana. It would no doubt be a good addition to the Obamas library. Who knows, maybe it would be a book that Sarah Palin wanted banned. The list of banned books posted on our library’s door right now includes all the Harry Potter series, which got so so many young people turned onto reading, and a slew of other well written jewels. Hope Holly Keller will keep writing*****

A read-aloud favorite!
My sister gave this book to my four-year-old daughter last year, and it has quickly become one of our favorites. It’s sweet, simple, and endearing, and has a wonderful message. Plus, there is a lot of dialog between the animal characters, which invites the reader to use silly voices, and makes it a fun read-aloud. My daughter shared it with her preschool class one day, and the teacher said it’s become a class favorite as well.

Help! book
This book is age appropriate, eye catching, and has a wonderful moral! As a teacher, I would say this is a must-buy!

kids loved it!
I’m a second grade teacher and luckily I found this book to talk about trust, gossiping and friendship with my children. amazing effect! They even wanted to create a role play based on the book!! We have analyzed it and take it to our personal situations. Great choice. Kids read it once and again. Five stars!!!

Kidnapped form his safe California home. Thrown into a life-and-death struggle on the frozen Artic wilderness. Half St. Bernard, half shepard, Buck learns many hard lessons as a sled dog: the lesson of the leash, of the cold, of near-starvation and cruelty. And the greatest lesson he learns from his last owner, John Thornton: the power of love and loyalty.

Yet always, even at the side of the human he loves, Buck feels the pull in his bones, an urge to answer his wolf ancestors as they howl to him.

Fabulous and Engaging for young readers
All of The Whole Story books are fantastic. My eighth graders love to read these because they enjoy the sideline information and pictorials that help them to better grasp the story. I bought a classroom set and have already requested for our school to invest in Tom Sawyer by this same company. Great Idea!

One of the best books about nature ever written
This is the first thing written by Jack London that I read. At the time, I was in elementary school and I checked it out from the middle school library when we were on an orientation visit. I found it so interesting that I proceeded to read everything of his that I could find. London’s expression of events from the perspective of the dog and the innate killer instinct of Buck combine to make an accurate story about nature, the kill or be killed reality of survival.
Yet, Buck is also capable of great love, his actions when he is with Thornton expresses the best traits of a domesticated dog, loyalty, courage and intelligence. Buck defends Thornton when attacked, rescues him from a watery death and engages in simple affectionate play. A true classic of American literature, this is a book that all children should read. Now that I have rediscovered London, I am on a hunt for his other writings.

Whole Story Series Review…
This is a review I previously wrote for four books in the Whole Story Series (Call of the Wild, The Jungle Book, Treasure Island, and Around the World in Eighty Days). I hope someone finds this helpful in their decision to purchase these books. :)

This is a wonderful series for children (and adults) who value learning through literature–especially classic literature. What makes it even more appealing to parents and educators is the way the publishers have integrated historically relevant facts with the complete, unabridged text. Each classic branches over several areas of learning–history, culture, geography, customs, animal life, architecture, literature, and science.

The Call of the Wild includes sidebars, maps, photographs, line drawings, diagrams, and paintings describing the Gold Rush, Klondike region, transcontinental railroad, sledding, traveling routes, harsh conditions, animal life, tools and procedures used for mining gold, and more.

The Jungle Book provides details about India, animal life, religious landmarks and architecture, culture and customs. It also includes two-page features on wolf children, the seal massacre, and a photo spread of India.

Around the World in Eighty Days takes the reader across a geographical journey using various forms of transportation. Maps, illustrations, and photographs provide rich detail into the culture and landmarks of many different locales and the means of transportation used in each leg of the journey.

Treasure Island provides abundant information on ocean-related topics–sailors, pirates, treasure chests, ocean voyages, living conditions, crimes and punishment, weaponry, traditions, slavery, animal and plant life, medicine and disease, and more. It includes two- or three-page spreads featuring ocean charts, navigational instruments, compasses, types of ships, a cut-out diagram of a ship’s compartments, sails, rigging, ropework, points of sail, and famous pirates.

These books inspire an integrated approach to learning and would make a wonderful addition to your home library.
