A true classic
This is the funniest and most original Christmas book I’ve seen in a long time. We discovered it last December and we’ll be reading it again many times this December. The boys (3 and 5) laugh so hard and so do I. This one will end up a holiday tradition.

THE CHRISTMAS BLIZZARD is a great Read-Aloud for age 4-104
The Christmas Blizzard is another great tall tale written by Helen Ketteman (former teacher who’s lived thru her share of blizzards) and illustrated by James Warhola (grandson of famous artist Andy Warhol)…The tale will blow you away from the get-go, as palm trees and sunny weather at the North Pole turn the hope of Christmas topsy-turvy…See the rest of L.Pritchett’s Editor’s Choice Award-winning review at[...]

The Christmas Blizzard
ISBN 0590458795 – Sometimes you can just tell, when you pick up a book, that it’s going to be one you really like… The Christmas Blizzard is one of those books, for me. It’s not thick, it’s actually a pretty flimsy paperback – but it DOES look like fun, and it is!

Sissy McNab tells oldtimer Maynard Jenkins that a snowstorm is on the way, prompting him to tell her the story of the blizzard of ‘22. That year, it was so cold that Maynard’s father’s sledgehammer cracked like glass! Stranger, it was tropically warm at the North Pole, so Santa re-located to the coldest place he could find – right in their town. Turned out, however, cold wasn’t enough to get the elves making toys, so Maynard went to see Miz Pendersnarf, an old woman who, it was said, could cast spells. Her spell works almost too well, but Maynard helps it along and soon the town is covered in feet of snow and Christmas is saved, convincing the mayor to rename the town Blizzard… I mean, Lizzard.

Illustrator James Warhola did fantastic work. The images are fun, laugh out loud funny, and full of detail; they match the story and they bring a certain character all their own. The author, Helen Ketteman, spins a convincing old mans’ tall tale that kids will love. There are stories that your child will remember, and pass on, and I think this one will be one of those.

The Christmas Blizzard by Helen Ketteman
This is one of the cuttest stories I have ever read. I used to read this book to my 3-year old class and they always wanted it read again and again. It makes you use your imagination and the illustrations are wonderfully done. Thanks for such a wonderful book.

All Time Favorite
Every winter I read this story to my little boys many, many times in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The characters are wonderful, and I particularly enjoyed giving voice to Mr. Jenkins, the storyteller. The illustrations are terrific and silly. My boys, now 10 and 11, enjoyed this story SO MUCH when they were little guys. I never thought they’d still want to hear it this Christmas! Make it a family tradition, it’s great fun!!

A Lyrical and Musical Classic
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had this playing and someone has said “Who’s this?” I tell them it’s the Grateful Dead and they’re amazed! What most people think is the Grateful Dead is not this album or it’s counterpart “American Beauty”. However these albums are to me not only their best work but they stand alone as two of the greatest albums of the rock era by any artists. I’m writing a review of “Workingman’s Dead” because it’s my favorite of the two. First of all the lyrics by Robert Hunter are just wonderful, “I don’t know but I’ve been told if the horse don’t pull you got to carry the load.” I mean the words just flow so wonderfully. The harmonies are incredible. They must have been inspired by Crosby, Stills and Nash or the Beach Boys. The music just chugs along like your on a cross-country trip going along the highway. These are great road songs. Jerry Garcia’s voice and slide guitar blend just perfectly. What else to say but this is just a perfect record. I recommend anyone who loves good music buy this album whether they think they’re a fan of the Dead or not. This will surely make them a fan.

Workingman or Beauty
Workingman’s dead a true classic from the Dead, could be classified a companion to American Beauty, both released in 1970,Workingman’s Dead first, could’ve easily been released as a double album,Workingman contains a mixture of different genres, blues, country, funk, and rock, yet in a subdued way, listen to,Uncle John’s Band,a definite classical touch and the Dead’s best weapon of course are the tight harmonies flowing consistently within each song,as so do the strong lyrics. Jerry Garcia’s steel guitar also stands out on,Dire Wolf,Garcia,a fine steel player, shows off his stuff, playing steel on C.S.N.& Y.’s,Teach Your Children Well, and could’ve stood to be more defined on American Beauty. Easy Wind,is a catchy tune that would fit well on a Hendrix album, and other notable songs such as,The Cumberland Blues, and High Time, adding to this album a great classic repertoire,it’s hard to say which two albums are better in comparison,Beauty or Workingman’s,if I had to choose I’d pick Workingman’s Dead, though a tough choice. These Rhino releases are excellent and loaded with Grateful Dead music with bonus tracks, mostly live, and single released tracks,a little more for your money.

Jerry’s alive, man!
Getting to hold this disc, place it in my stereo, and hear the bliss brought forth by such, great fails to capture the sensation; ‘though, it does, you know?

Working Class Heroes
“Workingman’s Dead” is music for truckin’ down a dusty gravel road. It paints a sonic landscape of Southern mines, railroads, vast desert mesas, tumbleweeds, and purple sage. This is a Grateful Dead album that’s a little bit country, a little bit rock n’roll, with some psychedelia thrown in for good measure. In a sense,it’s a predecessor to the “freak folk” of Devendra Barnhardt and Kimya Dawson&the Moldy Peaches. This is down home country music, as earthy as a bowl of grits, from the San Francisco Bay Area.

“Workingman’s Dead” opens with the hopeful country hymn “Uncle John’s Band.” Uncle John “comes to take his children home”–a hopeful hymn about the hereafter. There’s a sense of homecoming. “Dire Wolf” is a dark ballad with the refrain “please don’t murder me.” I’ve had the “Cumberland Blues” earworm. It’s a catchy song about the workaday world. “I’ve got to get down to the Cumberland mine/that’s where I spend my time.” “Black Peter” has Hammond organ;it’s a mournful song. “Casey Jones” is an anti-drug. It’s a warning song, with a moral. A train conductor, high on cocaine, heads to disaster.

“Workingman’s Dead” in the remastered version, has extra treats. The live version of “Dire Wolf” was performed in Santa Rosa,at the Veterans’ Hall. The live versions of “Cumberland Blues” and “Mason’s Children” were performed in Portland and Corvallis, Oregon, respectively. The Dead seemed to live in the Wine Country and the Pacific Northwest.

“Workingman’s Dead” is psychedelic country! Join Uncle John’s Band.

Whiskey Before Breakfast by Norman Blake – Save 12% Today!

Whiskey Before Breakfast by Norman Blake

Why Buy A Whiskey Before Breakfast by Norman Blake?
The first album to feature the virtuoso acoustic guitar playing of Norman Blake has come to be regarded as a true classic. Accompanied by second guitarist Charlie Collins, Norman offers definitive guitar performances of many old-time and bluegrass tunes, as well as several tradition-rooted originals. Whiskey Before Breakfast is a cornerstone of bluegrass and guitar record collections everywhere.

it’ll make you lay down your guitar.
Remember vinyl LP’s?? I wore out two vinyl copies of this album, and I’m one of those compulsive record geeks who cleans records each time, stores them properly, etc.

Norman Blake has a feel for traditional music, from the rousing martial-like “Under the Double Eagle” to the gentle “Ash Grove” and “The Minstrel Boy.”

The only drawback to this album would be if you yourself play guitar. It’ll make you weep. (”I’ll never be able to do that…”)

As far as the vocals go, they are absolutely in keeping with the style of the music. (Another reviewer slammed the vocals; hey, Billie Holiday’s voice was raspy and annoying at times, but no one would ever say it didn’t deliver the goods.)

the master
I’ve owned this CD since high school and listen to it constantly. It was the first Blake recording I bought and I did so without having ever heard him before; I had heard my older guitarist friends say good things about him and chose this one because I was familiar with more of the tunes on it than on the other albums in the rack. This is terrific playing–clean, no-gimmick flatpicking. Absolutely a great album.

10 Stars If You Had ‘Em
A lot of Blake fans consider “Live At McCabes” their favorite but, as good as the playing is there, for me the live guitar sound lacks warmth and “woodiness”. “Whiskey Before Breakfast” is what a big old Martin steel string should sound like.

Norman doesn’t play too much of this “fast stuff” anymore, but his lines still have a driving forward motion to them that make even the fastest tunes here, like “Salt Creek”, sound relaxed and effortless. I always wished he’d do a fingerpicking record as I think he’s underrated in that regard. “Down At Milow’s House” has a parlor-classical poise to it that almost reminds me of John Renbourn. I was familiar with his duet with Bromberg on “Arkansas Traveller” first before hearing this solo version.

The overall technique of younger players and the amount of educational information on flatpicking has exploded since this record came out in the 70’s. But for my money, few can touch it for pure soul.

One thing has always intrigued me: In the liner notes Nancy Blake mentions a “ebony nut” among the features of Norman’s D-18. However, from the pictures on the sleeve at least, the nut on that guitar sure looks like bone or some white composite rather than ebony. I know they use ebony for violin nuts and I’ve seen wooden nuts on old bowlback mandolins, but I’ve never come across a “modern” guitar with one. I wonder if she was referring to the bridge base, which looks like it could be ebony and probably would have some impact on the tone.

A musical gem
A true Norman Blake musical gem. If you are into the screamers, the slice them and dice them or the head bangers deluxe… this is not the album for you. If you enjoy great acoustic melody with lyrics that you can understand and appreciate .. look no further.

Music for the soul!
I have owned a vinyl copy of this album since 1974. The other day picked up my old frayed friend, pulled the vinyl disk out of the sleeve after not hearing it for a few year and realized that is was worn beyond redemption. I needed a replacement. Over the years, I played at playing the guitar (along with dulcimer, banjo and fiddle)since college. For awhile I could actually keep up with Norman on Under the Double Eagle for about the first 67 seconds then would lose him. Players might say Doc, or Jimmy H, or even Chet were the best players of all time but in my book it is Norman. He makes a guitar sing!
