Doctor Who
If you don’t want or can’t afford the whole first season, the smaller volumes are great. These are my favorite episodes & it’s nice seeing them without commercial interuption, plus you can actually erad the credits!

Fantastic season ender! Enter the NEW NEW DOCTOR!
Dr. Who is Forty (actually he’s 900, but like the Doctor, the show had been around in one form or another since 1964). During March and through June the BBC celebrated by bringing the show back to television for its 27th season (or as it is more consistently called: SEASON ONE)in a glossy, fast-paced enough to satisfy contemporary audiences, while still conscious of its roots. This SET contains all 13 season one episodess for the 2005 rebirth of the longest running sci-fi series in TV history. The producers, clearly have a respect and understanding of the UK icon. Obviously, fans, the creators do things with the show we would do ourselves.

Doctor Who has always has a voice defined by the decade each in tune with its era and this holds true to the new Doctor Who. This Doctor is almost child-like in his enthusiasm and wonder. Featuring the Doctor as played by Christopher Eccleston (Shallow Grave, Gone in 60 Seconds), infusing the character with great intensity and humanity, while remaining mysterious and alien, along with his companion Rose played by Billie Piper, growing from an awed slacker to a seasoned space adventurer. However, the format of the show has changed to 45 min. parts, some 2 parters ending with cliffhangers, some without. Like any “new” series there are good episodes and not-so-good ones, the upside here is MOST of these are great episodes! The 40 year history of the series isn’t squeezed into one pilot, through-out the year we get a trickle of back-story, some old, like his time/space machine looks like a police-call-box, and some new back-story, like the fact that his race, the TIMELORDS have been wiped out in a TIME WAR.

This set includes BOOM TOWN in which the Doctor, Rose, Capt. Jack and Mickey team up to stop Margaret, the sole survivor of the Slitheen family (from World War III and Aliens of London.
This was filmed as a cost-cutting “bottle episode” but has some great writing in it, as consequences of the Doctor’s actions are explored… what happens after the action, when the Doctor must dirty his hands with the possible execution of a defeated foe.

In the 12th episode, BAD WOLF, the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack have to fight for their lives on board the Game Station, in the season finale, THE PARTING of the WAYS, Rose Tyler has seen danger and wonders alongside the Doctor, but now their friendship is put to the test and the Doctor says goodbye…sort of. This 2 parter features “Big Brother,” & “Weakest link” gags as the Doctor becomes a “flatmate” and Rose a contestant. Also features the “Final Battle” of the “Time War,” the return of an old enemy in a battle sequence that couldn’t be beat even if Dr. Who goes to the big screen!

AWARDS:

The 2005 series won the 2006 BROADCAST AWARD for BEST DRAMA SERIES adding to the series’ successes at the National Television Awards (voted Most Popular Drama), TV Moments, and the BBC 2005 Drama Awards! The show’s two stars (Eccleston and Piper) scooped the most popular actor and actress honors in the awards voted by the public. Dr. Who (2005)was also nominated for not only the 2006 HUGO Award (announcing winners on Aug 26), but on May 7th it WON 5 of the most prestigious award British Television has to offer: the BAFTAS Awards (British Academy of FILM and TELEVISION ARTS) out of the 14 categories it was nominated. Winning for BEST DRAMA SERIES, BEST DIRECTOR, BEST MAKE-UP, BEST COSTUME, BEST DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY and the PIONEER AUDIENCE AWARD which was voted for by the British public (kind of like the US People’s Choice Award).

a Cooper classic
These late 70’s Alice Cooper albums are extremely underrated. Honestly, the last three albums he made in the 70’s appeal to me MUCH more than the Welcome to My Nightmare album.

Alright, something feels missing from the Lace and Whiskey album, and I think it’s a creepy atmosphere along with a hard rock edge to most of the songs. BUT, you know what? That doesn’t even matter, because the songwriting here is pretty darn good most of the time.

The title song has a really good verse melody and chorus, “Road Rats” and “King of the Silver Screen” both COOK with lots of energy and catchy vocals, and “Damned If I Do” recalls the classic years of stuff like “Under My Wheels” and “Muscle of Love”. THESE are probably my favorite kind of Cooper songs- short and snappy hard rock that should catch anyones attention and be considered immediate highlights.

“You and Me” is just beautiful, and the final track called “My God” reminds me of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Debbie Denise”. “(No More) Love at Your Convenience” is a nice taste of disco. Say what you want about it, but Alice knew how to make a good melody out of a disco tune.

Overall, I fail to understand why so many people dislike the music. Talk about excellent songwriting.

Where To Buy Greatest Misses by Devo At The Lowest Price?

Greatest Misses by Devo

Why Buy A Greatest Misses by Devo?
Great collection at a great price.

Shrivel up, Devo!
It’s interesting to see what tracks Devo picked for “Greatest Misses” as compared with “Greatest Hits” – I think this volume is significantly more interesting to listen to and in the long run is the better compilation. I’m not usually a fan of “best of” CDs – and I’d suggest getting Devo’s first 3 CDs because they are about as good as you can get for late 70’s/early 80’s punk/new wave. But this has a couple of really great alternate versions (the Booji Boy mixes) that breathe new life into these great songs. I think for those songs alone it’s worth the $10 I paid for it. I also enjoyed listening to “Speed Racer” – glad to have that one without having to buy “Oh No, It’s Devo” (I think that’s what it’s from)- which isn’t so hot. Mark Mothersbaugh & Jerry C – those guys are geniuses and will someday will be recognized as the pioneers that they are. Devolution is real and it’s happening all around us – look (listen) and see!

DEVO compilation CD
The greatest MISSES, part two of the greatest HITS, DEVO, two disc cd package, is just as good as the greatest hits disc, if not better. It contains, some of their more obscure songs, that didn’t get the MTV treatment. In any case, if you haven’t heard the Spud Boys lately, this disc will remind you of how good they actually were.

Warner Brothers Sueños Liquidos by Maná – Save 15% Today!

Sueños Liquidos by Maná

Why Buy A Sueños Liquidos by Maná?
With magnetic rhythms, cool grooves, and catchy hooks, the Mexican rock band Maná have conquered fans on both sides of the border. From the wickedly cool opener Hechicera to the pulsating Un Lobo por Tu Amor, the tunes are easy to get into, regardless of whether you know Spanish or not. Theres plenty of fun, too, on the rollicking Tu Tienes Lo Que Quiero and the zany Clavado en un Bar, which became the tour anthem during the bands 1998 tour. Also bewitching are the romantic En el Muelle de San Blas and the achy love ode Como Dueles en los Labios. The band is also daring, remembering political prisoners around the world on Me Voy a Convertir en un Ave. –Ramiro Burr

One of the top three albums.
Of all the albums this is my favorite. It has melodies that make you want to cry like track #3 while “clavado en un bar” brings you back up to existence even though he sings of a broken heart. Overall the theme of “luquid dream” serves the album. The tracks are spread in terms of tempo, mood, and melody but they all share the Mana catchy rhyme and rhythm. One of their best.

Absolutely Completely Awesome, but…
Mana is absolutely the best, of course, and of all their albums this is my favorite. Every single one of the songs is worth it but I wanted to address an issue that surprised me a little, something that nobody seems to have encountered: At the end of the entire CD, on the track of “Amame hasta que me muera” there is a short pause, after which you can hear these almost satanic-like sounds, which makes me think of all those times you hear about cd’s having “satanic” bits in them or if you play them backwards or something like that, and then these horrifying growling words (I speak both spanish and english fluently and could not recognize any of them) that sent goosebumps all over my body! I just want to know what the heck this is all about!

Great Album
There is nothing bad about this album. It includes the relaxing “En el Muelle de San Blas” and the darker “Hechicera”, both of which are simply wonderful. While I am not fluent enough in Spanish to grasp the original intent and meaning behind the lyrics, it is possible to understand enough to get the point of the song and enjoy it. And even if you dont know a word of spanish, the music is enough to relax you and stick in your head. Yet another sweet album by these Grammy winners.
